Another Couple of Questions

As some of you might have read i am looking for a Bent Pipe and have seen one or two Petersons that i like. One of my questions is :- What are Fishtail and P-Lip as i haven't a clue.
My 2nd question is a couple of them say Filter Pipes, does this mean they have to have a filter. I thought you could put a filter in any pipe. I don't think i will be ever using filters but thought it something i should know.

Not every pipe will accept a filter in the stem. There are two common size filters: 6mm and 9mm. Filtered pipes are drilled with a larger airhole to accept a filter. Nonfiltered pipes airhole is drilled smaller; so unless you modify the airhole in that pipe or widdle down a wood filter a nonfiltered pipe does not accept filters as is.

To the question of whether filtered pipes "have to" have a filter - no. I have a few filtered pipes and I don't use filters in them.

A fishtail simply Peterson's non-P lip mouthpiece - a bit of a flare to it, hence the name.

Although some love them, I consider p-lip mouthpieces an abomination, flat fishtails being my strong preference.

I smoke some filter pipes without filters; this turns them into a kind of reverse calabash and enhances flavour.

Another thing to know, you can always smoke a filtered pipe without the filter if you want. I find that smoking with the chamber empty gives it a nice calabash-type effect but they also sell very cheap adapters that will reduce the chamber size down if you want it to draw like a normally drilled pipe.

Seriously dont let the anti P-Lip guys scare you. I love both fishtail and P-Lip, but a Peterson just isnt a Peterson without the P-Lip....in my opinion....and the opinion of many pipers.
They are made to put the smoke towards the roof of your mouth, apparently to prevent tongue bite, and to enhance flavor. Im not sure about any of that, but the P-Lip is a part of piping history.
Don't mind the gunky stem, this was the best representation in my 30 second Google search.

It's popular and safe for some people to pile on a bandwagon of dislike about something. Plips are one of those things. Frankly, who gives a sh$t what others think about a Plip. Yeh, it's harder to run a pipe cleaner through. Guys what, life is full of things like that.

P lips are something people like to hate on. If the p lip was as bad as most detractors say, why have so many companies copied it? If it was sooo bad, why does savinelli make the total peterson system p lip clone , the dry system?

The cleaning of the p lip stem is easy. Get the tapered p lip pipe cleaners. They are really nice and pull through fine.

The peterson fish tail is not like any other fishtail ive had, and its superior.
