Beautiful pipe. Are there any differences from smoking a briar?
Thank you.
Yes, quite different to a briar.

The air chamber results in a cooler, drier smoke. Absolutely no gurgles.
The large volume of air in the chamber "dilutes" the smoke somewhat.
I smoke my stronger blends eg Peterson's Irish Flake in it as I find I don't get a Nic hit.

The gourd chamber acts as a moisture and tar trap. Last year I dissembled it and gave it a 2 day cotton ball and alcohol soak. It smokes a lot "cleaner" since.

Pretty but I see no decisive evidence that it's a Bauer. Tread carefully, even BC uses briar as an extension.

I would definitely be asking for a photo of the stamp.

Andreas Bauer did not always mark his cartouche on every calabash... the presence or absence of a mark is dependent on year made. His trademark was considered the thimble briar joint from gourd to stem.

that thimble joint does not look at all like the AB thimble joint( it is artistically out of proportion with the body of the gourd )....and the joint is more difficult to pull off then any AB cartouche pressed into wood. The thimble joint was Briar. Did you know AB made all the gourd calabash pipes for Dunhill and as a nod to the AB thimble all Dunhill Briar pipes have that distinctive bead between the body of the pipe and the stem

You said the briar thimble was his trademark. Different brands have the briar junction.

After owning many Dunhill pipes I can say that owning and smoking them put me off of delving into their history.

Yes but not with those proportions and his finished pipe quality is very noticeable. Just to make note I can’t imagine how many counterfeiters rely on a reproduction makers mark cartouche pressed into wood I could probably get a great counterfeit makers mark impression for under 50. Bucks.
