olderthandirt - oh, I know. My grandfather owns a chicken farm and the farm house was only about 500 yards away from the coop. Here in The Poultry Capitol of the World, I'm well used to the smell and general filth of the little peckers. Two turkeys are still worse than the 1000 chickens on Papa's farm.

I know exactly what you mean Bob. There is a major processing plant not too far from here. I get my chickens from the local Amish.

one day you get 2 eggs, the next day you get one egg, that gives you a daily avg of 1.5 eggs a day...
being females, chickens lay eggs when they want, and cows calve when they want so you always need at least 10% more to get what you want from them...

Well shoot.

If I can only expect 1 1/2 eggs a day it sounds as tho I won't be getting to awfully many omelets outta these girls.

I told the wife it would be cheaper to just keep buying our eggs from the store but no, she wanted em'.
Pets.

Just darn stinky pets. The things we do for love....

I just got my hens in June. We built our own coop and run with some hardware cloth for protection from predators. We have 4 and they are very easy to take care of IMHO. Easier than my cats. They are in a molt right now so haven't been laying. It has been an interesting learning experience. I also love to set them loose in my yard and watch them hunt for bugs while I enjoy a pipe. Very relaxing.

Hey chopz, urban chicken thread resurrection.
For the past 2 months the 3 birds have been averaging like 2 1/2 eggs a day. been giving the eggs away, can't eat em all.
SWMBO has added to my honey-do list a new chicken run. Damn. Cleared out one end of the barn/shed, put a small fenced in area in it. Coop at one end, barn wall at the other. Hatch installed in wall so they can exit into the new outside run that I'm way behind on framing up. Bother.
Gotta say though, while not worth the effort involved as far as I'm concerned, the eggs are sure tasty.

years ago when we had chickens we put a fake egg in each nest, seemed to keep them in the laying mood

Bless'ed are the SWMBO's for they are ALWAYS right.
LMAO OTD you think all the construction has been bothersome, just wait until the time for that casserole arrives and it's your job to remove the head, wait until it's finished doing the headless chicken dance (feels like an eternity), then pluck and gut. I'll bet London to a brick that there's no way you'll eat "anyone you know" but, if you do, give me a yell if you need any help in the finer points from slaughter to preparation, skips off giggling.
