I don't own any bamboo stem pipes (or pipes with any other use of bamboo), but it is not because I dislike them per se. I think it is an extremely challenging use of mixed materials. It's the same way I think it is rare to successfully use precious or semiprecious stones on pipes without looking tacky. But when it is done right, it can be startling and breathtaking. It just requires highly developed craftsmanship and an even more cultivated artistic and designer's eye. When it works, it can really work. I think jewels are even harder to incorporate without looking garish. But it's been done ... well.

That would look really nice with all its brethren in my collection. That is what a smooth Zulu should look like, Plato's form of a Zulu. Quarter bent, serious Bird's Eye, it has it all and the maker, o-yeah. I hope you have smoked it by now.

Nope, I have never smoked this one. I went through a zulu phase a few years ago and discovered shortly after I bought this one that, while I love the shape, I really suck at smoking canted pipes. Luckily I made that discovery before I lit flame to this one.

I assume it is part of your RAD collection, but should you ever decide to let it go...I'm your Huckleberry.

Michael-
Since you opened the door on unsolicited negative opinions, I detest your avatar. It's probably insulting to someone or other. Doesn't insult me, but I try to avoid looking at it.

Not sure why you felt the need to post such
The same could be asked as to why you felt the need to respond. It's an online forum where people discuss various topics and share their views and opinions. Members aren't required to respond to every topic...
To the original post, I'm right there with you, I don't find them appealing at all, but I've come to learn that my taste has continually changed during my first year of pipe smoking, When I first started I thought cobs looked hideous and I really didn't like the look of black sandblasted pipes. Today i own 4 cobs and 2 black sandblasted pipes. So who knows, they may start to grow on me in the near future, although I'm totally fine if they don't as I don't need added temptation to buy another pipe ;)

Here's one that I made for a friend. Sold it to him for $35.00 Wish I had it back. Ive got two more I made but this was the nicest. Bamboo stems dry out the smoke quite well as long as no metal tube is run through them to the bowl.

I was wondering about a bamboo bowl just yesterday. It is a perfect cylinder. I dont know how you would transition to the stem though.

I don't have a problem with an unpopular opinion or of someone posting that they don't like one thing or another. I usually only weigh in against a post when the post is phrased to belittle someone else for something. There's a fine semantic line between the two. If I hate lakelands, then fine, but if I think Lakeland smokers are all grannie panty sniffers... well... That's ok too. Hmmm... Maybe it's just pipes. Tobacco is ok to belittle.

Ha!
Anyways, I like bamboos. I have a dozen or so, but they have to be well made with vulcanite rings on the ends with stainless connectors. I like them when they are lightweight, smoke in a clench very well, and don't look like someone just slapped bamboo on an ugly pipe. I'm not very fond of bamboo billiards, but I detest billiards anyway. I am also repulsed by briar being carved to look like bamboo, blech! To me they have Gilligan Island appeal. I also have a bamboo grove on my property, so I make a lot of stuff from bamboo, too many bamboo fishing rods to shake a stick at.
To each his own, except for Lakelands. Ha! :puffy:

This was my first bamboo. I had just been in the B&M the week before blowing off about how I thought that pokers looked stupid, and in walks Brad Rowley and this pipe. I had to eat those words, because this one was beautiful, and I had to eat those words for weeks on end. Guys at a B&M can be quite cruel, ha ha. Anyways, I still don't like pokers much, but I love this one, and the bamboo just sets it off, IMO. It also gets a lot of attention when I smoke it out and about. I love a good conversation starter, and billiards just don't start many conversations, IMO. This one however, almost always gets a comment when out and about. This pipe and a good straw hat...

You know I haven't really thought about it but for me, if they are well proportioned and designed then I think they can offer a different look and feel to a pipe.. I didn't use to like Cobs but now I have quite a few that I really REALLY like.
