Like mso489, I let the pipe get stone cold before removing the stem - for non-military mount pipes. I generally let my military mount pipes (mostly Petes) get cold also unless circumstances dictate otherwise, e.g. riding my motorcycle, out on the stream flyfishing, etc. But that's why I take military mounts on those occasions.
woodsroad and cosmicfolklore can do as they please. It doesn't bother me at all. I just like to be on the safe side whenever possible with MY pipes.

Always a good reminder. There are many loose pipes out there, and I would assume this is why the majority of them ended up that way.

Been taking them apart immediately after a smoke, tars and whatever are hot and come out better than letting it cool turning into gunk you can't remove. Both Shank and tendon are warm, gentle twist and now you have a pipe that can be cleaned while everything is in suspension . Been doing it for years with no problem, works for me.

The only time I ever had a problem was from leaving the stem out too long after cleaning other than that It just does not matter .If you smoke hot enough to heat up your stem I will pray for you and your pipe .
