There's always a chance, but I doubt it in this instance because the word, hands, is in quotes. Sasieni used quotes for model names.
No, you must be right -- little chance that's a shop name, then.

Just for fun, read comment 29 at the Sasieni article at Murder of Ravens by Robert Butcher, as sablebrush said, "...whatever turned a pence."

so are the second's names we familiar with really the 3rds and fourths? Anyhow the stem is in perfect condition, not oxidized, I don't think the stem was cleaned either. It was a steal, and all can guess is that it because the leather on the front of the bowl is starting to fray.

Another interesting Sasieni second went off this evening:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Berkeley-Club-London-Made-Tobacco-Pipe-/390948494876?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=PFxJlfv%252FZVyIkuJj3xxl4IRtpnI%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
It's stamped 788, which would be the Sasieni Ashford shape.

I wondered if you were going to post that one as well. $50 is way more reasonable for what this one is. I again opened the bidding on that one. but I didn't think I would get it and I didn't.

The CS&F was a shop pipe made for that particular tobacconist
Actually I believe CS&F was not a pipe shop per se, but a local Oakland department store now largely forgotten. The full name was Capwell Sullivan and Furth. CS&F was formed in May of 1929, hardly the most auspicious time to launch a business given the impending crash. It managed to thrive, however, lasting until the doors were finally closed about 1953.
All Sasieni pipes bearing the CS&F stamping must therefore date from some time within that 24 year span.

I have an odd, Shape 688 (Ashford) but the brand starts with a W, perhaps Winston?
Smooth? Sandblast? Other? Picture? I was just looking at a couple of my Windsor's, they both only have the two digit shape numbers. In the 1930's the Mayfair had the 6 prefix...

I apologize for the tease! The pipe is soaking at the moment, pictures to come.
Wow, what a list of only "W" named Sasieni 2nd's -

Worchester

Wingate

Windmere

Wimbledon

Wild Honey

Westmoreland

Wellington
I think it is one of the last two. Part of the problem is that a Sterling band was added, partially obscuring the worn name.

Here you go.
I can discern a WIN, so I conclude that it must be a Wingate.
Oddly, the Sterling band was added, but under magnification, I see no signs of any cracks.

I'll finish it later tonight or tomorrow and start a separate thread on the pipe.

Now we're getting somewhere. I'm reading WIN??O..., but more importantly, the rustication looks like some of the experiments Sasieni was trying out in the late 1930's ~ 1950 for the "seconds" before settling on the finish seen on the Old England pipes. Al, if you decide to sell that pipe, let me know!
