An Odd Duck Dunhill?

I picked this up in an auction lot and was intrigued as it came with an original Dunhill box, guarantee certificate, and brochure advertising Dunhill tobacco… Not to mention the the Black Briar and gold band… it has potential to be a real beauty..
Being a novice, I put the date at 1978. I don’t understand the EP stamp? And the gold band doesn’t match the traditional Dunhill gold bands that I’ve seen whilst researching….
I’ve not seen any other smooth, Black Briar like this and am just puzzled as to whether or not anyone had come across this pipe before?

I see 15, 16 and 18 as date stamps. So made in 1975, sold in 1976 and maybe some warranty work done in 1978. Something like that anyway.
The gold band has the AD (Alfred Dunhill) diamond and gold hallmarks. That is the first Black Briar I’ve seen. It’s a new model to me. But I am by no means a Dunhill expert.
Looks pretty restorable. Although the rim is kinda ugly.

The rim definitely needs a LOT of attention.
I think I’m going to send this one off to a pro… it has the potential of being a true “Black Beauty” in the right hands…. Just not mine (hahahaha) I’d muck it up for sure.

The "EP" stamp denotes this as a Canadian shape. For another Canadian with the same stamping, see:

No a Black Briar is not a Shell. IMO It’s a slightly more transparent black stained pipe with a darker brownish undertone than the purple/eggplant undertone on the black Dress finish.

Dunhill used to have the ES (perhaps extended shank) classification for large Canadians until the 70s, before the introduction of the ODA for that model. Later there was a slightly smaller EC version. Curiously, all the ones that are sealed EP have a longer mouthpiece than theirs, which has a traditional Canadian mouthpiece. Added to the fact that it is a black briar makes it a peculiar pipe. Congratulations.

Well, I’m not a professional photographer, but I do what I’m told…. Here’s a couple of more pictures on black background instead of blue and I tried under-exposing the image. I’m using an Iphone, a paper clip, and a pen light. So it is what it is…..
I think they came out clearer than the first set… less glare on the nomenclature… so thanks for the advice.
