Another day, another pipe. This one shows promise. Straight grain, sterling band.
Gotta repair the stem, tho.
This one almost got away from me. Normally I would insert a section of sanded-down tongue depressor coated with Vaseline to create a bridge over which to flow SuperGlue. My medium-viscosity black SuperGlue was a little runny today and I wound up with a clogged stem. I drilled it out and started over. This time I got wise and inserted a pipe cleaner coated with Vaseline right up to the edge of the damage. This kept the airway clear. I also switched to a thicker, clear SuperGlue, and added black as the job progressed. I really don't like this sort of work. After the glue dries it's time to file, shape and sand. Getting there:
I sanded down the stummel, finishing with 1000-grit wet-sanding with alcohol. I then starting buffing with the Dremel and Tripoli Compound. This time around, I did not add any color. Here's a picture of the process, buffed section on the right.
Pretty grain. Almost done.
A stem/button with that much damage is never going to look brand new, but this one will pass muster:
A handsome little pipe.
Elapsed time: Just under 3 hours.
