Hi all. Im wondering what poeple's views on Petersons aromatic blends are? My only experience with aromatics was the half once of black cherry from my B&M that i picked up with my first pipe (MM Cob). I found it to smell amazing, but tasted thin and unsatisfying. Since then all i have smoked is Latakia blends and Vapers! I feel i may be missing out on a whole area of pipe tobaccos by avoiding aromatics so i have just ordered tins of Petersons 'Nutty Cut' and 'Connoisseur's Choice'.Has anyone been convereted by such blends, or are they destined to be what i give my non pipe friends who want a novelty smoke ?

I haven't tried any of the Peterson blends, however two aromatics that I can strongly recommend are W.O. Larsen "Old Fashioned" and Peter Stokkebye "Dansk Black." I'm not a huge aromatic fan preferring English blends but I like these two a lot!

I'd say they're destined to impress those that are around you while you're smoking and simultaneously disappointing you in flavour and quality.
Unless it's Grousemoor.

I enjoy both aros and English blends, and one of my favorites is Devil's Holiday from Dan Pipe Tobacco. Kinda fruity, but is not without flavor!

I am smoking right now Connoisseurs's Choice, and I find it very good. Very balanced. Smooth but tasteful. I have tried Sunset Breeze and Sweet Killarney from Peterson. They are very similar. Sunset Breeze converted me into the virtues of an Aro, and this one is in the same line. From my limited aromatic experience, this is a tin that I will try to have always in the cellar. I find it pleasant in its smoke balance, and the room aroma is outstanding.

If you want to see if you even like smoking aromatics. I suggest you buy a pouch of Captain Black in white pouch. Its my favorite of all the aromatics I have smoked and its the cheapest and easiest to get and provides a nice smooth no bite taste that your friends and family will love.

As for Peterson I have tried Nutty Cut...its very good but more expensive.

How about Benjamin Hartwell's Evening Stroll? It's not as sweet as some, so a nice, lighter smoker when the VA isn't what you want.

As far as passable full aromatics go, Iwan Ries Three Star China Black Fire Cured is really tasty & smells incredible. If you want to drop a few more bucks & can find it, McClelland Holiday Spirit is pretty good too.

Boswell's Best is pretty good. The smell is appealing to those around you and the genuine tobacco taste is enough to keep you interested. It is kind of like Lane's 1Q on steroids.

From what Im hearing here, most folks that don't care for aromatics feel that way because the aroma rather than the tobacco tends to be the focus with most aromatics. I feel the same way. There have been lots of aromatics that I just LOVE the smell of, but smoking them is akin to shoving a pile of flavoured paper in your pipe. I am not a fan of aromatics, but in the past couple of years I have started to give them a chance and have found a few that are actuyally high quality tobaccos that have added aromatic agents to make them smell and taste a certain way that seems to compliment the tobaccos used in the blend. W.O. Larsen Signature Vintage mixture is one, Amphora Full Aroma is another, Lakeland tobaccos are yet another. these are not just tobaccos put together to carry an aromatic agent, but fine tobaccos on their own right to which aromatic agents are added to further enhance an already high quality tobacco blend.

Ohin3, good point. I completely forgot about a 7 year old tin of W.O. Larsen I am working through (Selct Blend No.80 - Light Aromatic). It is such a great tobacco, that I forget it's "technically" marketed as an aromatic. To that point, my wife really doesn't like how it smells! The fairly high VA content is probably the culprit.

Can you find Mac Baren in the UK? 7 Seas Royal is nice if you give it some dry time.

Recieved my tins today and had a small bowl of 'Nutty Cut' a few hours ago. As expected the smell was amazing, and i have to say the taste was pretty good too. However it was very light overall and also had a very low amount of lady N. When i havent had a smoke for a good few days and im unwinding with a glass of wine or whiskey i highly doubt i'll be reaching for this stuff, but it may have its place when BBQing etc. I'm definately not an aromatic convert based on this, but i will try and source some of the tins you guys have mentioned. Half the fun is in the anticipation of the unexplored after all!

I will only say that you should call Cornell and Diehl on the phone. There number is: (800) 433-0080. Tell them your problem and ask to speak to Chris or Craig Tarler. Tell them that Captain Bob recommended that you call them. They will satisfy you even if it has nothing to do with my C&D blends. Just do it!

McClelland 2000 Bulk is what some call a "crossover" blend. Non goopy VA with some sort of topping. My taster sucks at identifying a lot of flavors. When I do identify a flavor it just comes to me. If I try, fuhgetaboutit. I want to say it is sort of like a vanilla/maple/or some such. Wish I knew. It smells great, has decent enough flavor, and will actually dry when set out, in about 15-30 minutes, so maybe no PG? It will bite if too moist.

I have to say Connoisseur's Choice is my favorite tobacco right now. If you're looking for Peterson aromatics that tranfer the tin note the best look no further than their limited edition blends. They are a bit more pricey because of the tin art and the fact they're only sold in 100 gram tins, but they're well worth it. Last year's Special Reserve, Summertime, and Holiday Season were all very good (Holiday Season was my favorite of the three).
As for other brands if Mac Baren's sells in the UK check out their 7 Seas line. Great American style aromatics. The Royal Blend tends to be favored, but all five of the blends are good. And I'd also mention for a good simple aromatic Lane's Limited 1Q. One of the most popular aromatics probably ever, it's a good simple smoke that tastes just like it smells.
