I was recently talking to a cigar smoker about a recent experience I had with cigars. It was my third time smoking them and I told him it was hard to enjoy it this time around having been smoking a pipe for the better part of this past year. I much prefer the pipe tobacco taste/aroma to the cigars I've sampled. He told me he tried pipes and couldn't get into them. His analogy went like this:
Cigarettes are like a one night stand, cigars are like dating, and pipe smoking is like marriage.
I haven't had cigarettes (or one night stands for that matter) so am unsure what to think of his analogy. I thought it was interesting and worth sharing. Perhaps you veterans have heard this before.

I like to think of cigars as like turning on the radio for music, and pipes as learning an instrument to play your own songs, because there are so many variables to make a blend taste different, the pack, moisture, size and shape of the bowl selected, cadence, and even mixing your own blends. Cigars have slight variables, but no matter how you play them, they're still the same song prepared by someone else.

I disagree - a marriage is to the same person, well, typically. To me, cigars are so one-dimensional, that seems more like a marriage to me. With the pipe, you can smoke a 1,000 different blends in the same pipe, that sounds like dating to me. I only smoke a cigar occasionally and I always get an odd feeling holding such a big thing in my mouth, in contrast to a nice, slim, hand-cut button. But, to each his own.

What's that saying...smoking a cigarette is like running down the street, smoking a cigar is like strolling down the street and pipe smoking is sitting on a park bench and watching...

Can't really argue with tastes. Some just prefer what they prefer. Dedicated smoking seems like a marriage to me regardless of the chosen instrument. There is a serious monogamy aboutt it: a cigarette smoker smokes his brand, a cigar smoker or pipe smoker has his habits, as well.

Sounds like an unhappy marriage. Cigars are easy because you can just light them up, smoke them, and your done, commitment free. You have to learn how to smoke a pipe, and it takes some patience and time. Maybe he should change it to: cigarettes=one night stands, cigars=(deoending on your funds)cheap to expensive prostitutes, learn to smoke a pipe=dating, and the comes baby in a baby carriage? All seems a bit too elementary to me. :D

Your friend twisted an old saying that went something like this, "Cigarettes and cigars are like one night stands; enjoyed once and then thrown away. A pipe is like a beautiful wife; to be enjoyed forever."

Going with SSJONES analogy. A cigarette is a bachelor. A cigar is monogamy and pipes are polygamy. I'm from the Southwest and it's what I see when I do fires in Southern Utah.

I actually like Cosmic's analogy. It fits me better. However, I'd change it up just a tad by saying a cigarette is just a song, maybe not even a very good song... but it's the song they're playing over and over again on the radio. Whereas the cigar is the album... so much more going on in the whole album with some songs that are way better than the one crappy song they're playing to death on the radio. Pipes are indeed the instrument, to learn, and to master. However, no matter how much you've mastered the instrument, there's always more to learn. And with knowledge of the instrument, you can write your own songs (blend your own tobacco) record your own albums (carve your own pipes) for others to enjoy.

I like this, except for the cigarettes. Those are nasty horrible chew-your-arm-off-in-the-morning one night stands. Cigars are fun dalliances and then you settle in with a good pipe of forever-goodness.

cigarettes you smoke it and you throw them away with out any regard, like a one night stand, cigars, well you have to go into the humador, look, feel and smell to see if you probably find the right cigar to smoke, then you have to be prepared to sit and smoke it for an hour, also when you finish smoking it, you have to let it burn out, can't snuff out the embers, which is like dating a woman, you have to look around for the one you find attractive, take her out to dinner and if you enjoy her time, you end the night with a warm kiss on the lips as the night winds down, a pipe is sturdy, will last for years, will be there always waiting for you, yea there might be a couple of cigars on the side, now and then, but the pipe, yes sir, it will be there!! it will comfort you, it will make you think about life as you puff away your thoughts into the night sky, and it is more intimante with its blends and taste and aromas, the pipe is like the wife, the one you treat with love and care and if you treat her right, she will be there for many years to come.

That's an interesting analogy, I can kinda see where he's coming from.
I smoked cigarettes for about 10 years, quit tobacco altogether for about 3 years, started smoking/collecting cigars about 2009 and started experimenting with the pipe about a year ago. Since then I've slowly gravitated more towards pipe smoking.
I liken them to drinks. Cigarettes are like cans of cheap and strong beer, there purely to deliver nicotine/alcohol rather than for the enjoyment of the product.
Cigars are like wine, there are many brands/vineyards with different styles/vitolas and vintage tends to matter quite a lot with both. Overall though, wine tastes like wine just as cigars taste like cigars. If you don't like the core flavour experience then it's doubtful that trying other styles is likely to change that.
Pipe tobacco is like the world of spirits. There's a much wider range of types and styles on offer, from the cheap vodka of drug store blends to the XO congac of aged stonehaven. You've got the smokey westcoast scotch of latakia and the floral gin of lakelands. Here, people can like a bit of everything or have strong preferences to one or two particular styles.
It's this variety that has drawn me more and more to the pipe-side. That and the fact that you can choose exactly how long you want your smoke to be with you pipe selection.

All three are like marriage. Seem like a good idea in the beginning, drain your wallet, and you're always looking for a new one.

Cigarette smoking...drinking ale to quench ones thirst.
Cigar smoking...drinking a fine wine to wash down a good meal.
Pipe smoking...drinking 18 year old Cardhu Single Malt for the sheer pleasure.
Well that's my tuppence worth anyway :puffy:
Regards,
Jay.
