I am out and about all day so I was wondering which is better a big all day pipe or a smaller one that I will have to re-load several times?

I have an all day pipe that I use when I am out of the house. It is a short pipe with a smaller bowl, I get about 30 minutes out of it which is perfect for me! It's really just a matter of how long you have to smoke, what you will be doing between smokes, and your personal preference. There won't be a correct answer for you because everyone will have a different answer and a different reason for their answer!

Chlogeo3 as bubbadreier stated it's definately personall preference .I have pipes I dedicate to different activities. When I golf I have a nice meer that will smoke for about an hour and it's dimpeled and looks like a golf ball produces many compliments. Then I have a Dr. Grabow that I keep in my truck and smoke on my 30 min comute to work.I could keep on for a while but I'll spare you.

Maybe I am asking the wrong question so let me try this; How many times can you refill the same pipe and is there any harm to the pipe that is re-smoked all day?

How many times can you refill the same pipe

Yes.

is there any harm to the pipe that is re-smoked all day?

No.
Let me clarify:

Some pipes; (and I have a couple) can only stand one or two bowls before they need to rest for at least a week, others I smoke several times a day for a week or more with no problems.
I think the main thing to avoid when you want to smoke the same pipe for extended periods, is simply don't let the bottom of the bowl develop too much moisture. It can cause problems like a soft cake and it can go sour on you. And will require either an extended rest or very careful and extensive cleaning.
But, (speaking for myself) I will smoke a couple of pipes all day, usually alternating so if they require some attention, I can provide it.

To be honest my all day/ work pipe is a MM Legend Cob. You can beat the hell out of them and it is only 5 bucks to replace. They smoke good hold around 30 min or so of tobac and if you baby them a bit will last 20+ years. Mine last a few months but like I said it is my work/beater all around pipe. If you are a cob snob, MM makes 2 wooden models that are also very inexpensive and smoke well also.

Thanks for the info, duncan! I've been eyeing those wooden MM but not purchased because I was worried that they'd be crummy pipes, but if they are decent smokers, I'll have to pick a few up!

Jason I have one of those wooden pipes and they are actually pretty nice smokes, they do heat up really quick and stay very hot. At their price though I would just buy 5 and keep them around!
I don't use it as my everyday pipe though, it has a certain "roughness" to the smoke that I don't enjoy all the time

My advice would be to have two all-day pipes if you're nervous. What I like to do in those situations is alternate between two pipes over the course of the day and then give them a longer rest of at least a week. The easy alternative is to get yourself an MM Diplomat and go to town. I have no proof, but my gut instinct is to say the new natural Diplomat would dry faster and therefore be even less affected by the repeated use.

I think StrongIrish nailed it.
Also, consider that a meerschaum, or better, a meerschaum-lined briar, can stand-up to continuous use better than an ordinary briar.
