I remember that thrilling final very well (Australia lost the first few lines and seemed on the verge of losing the trophy but then won all the others). I was rooting for you; nothing personal against the Americans, but I wanted to see someone else win, even if only for sensationalism.
But I also have to blame you for having laid the first brick to build what the America's Cup has become today, because I think that if it had always remained in the United States, the formula would never have changed. Maybe.

Agree but like the old saying goes, if you want to make an omelette you have to break some eggs and Bertram and Bond just operated within the rules but certainly pushed the boundaries. The current racing, whilst incredibly technical has certainly lost that old charm for sure but we see technological advancement in every sport now. Larger racquets in tennis, Michael Jordan bent the rules with his air Jordan’s, formula 1 is a shadow of itself from when Ayrton Senna drove on the brink like no one before him. I miss the pure sport for want of a better way to describe it but technology is here to stay and is sure to be exploited given the amount of money now involved in sport.

Today in the first race American Magic clearly beat Alinghi; Team New Zealand massacred Britannia and in the third race Luna Rossa beat American Magic by virtue of a better start, but the two boats seemed close in terms of performance.
The last race (New Zealand vs Orient Express, the French boat) was not a fight due to a failure of the French boat that did not even start.

I must admit that this type of boat puts on a show; if I have to find a limit it is that below a certain wind speed, these boats do not lift off the water and are practically stationary.
I don't even think a race with light wind can be held.

Too modern, too sophisticated. They go too fast, you don't see anyone smoking a pipe, it's stressful, they don't even have time for a shot of rum. It's very boring, I don't see these things, it's like the Tour of Spain, but on a boat.

But, and, the technology is out of this world. That part is very interesting to me.

And, but, I agree the preliminary races are seldom exciting. Why only beat and run? No triangular courses?

Can these boats even do well on a reach?

The televising needs some real improvements, too.

I love a lot of cups. American cups are ok. But well made French Duralex in Picard is my favorite. Been drinking coffee out of diner mugs lately. Like Buffalo China type.

I have to zig zag downwind on my catamaran. Because its faster. By zig zagging I would get to the downwind mark faster than a boat that went in a straight line. By zig zagging I generate apparent wind which I can use. Think of driving a car at 70mph and sticking your head out of the window. You get 70mph of apparent wind.
But these America's cup boats are something else. They are very very clever and sophisticated, not to mention expensive.
I will try to watch some of the races on youtube as and when I can find them.

That applies to monohulls as well. Tacking downwind is a well known racing tactic.

These are very expensive cups and saucers.

Yeah, anytime a sailboat can reach speeds of 3-5x the windspeed, whoa!

So much tech to understand, and yet human error is playing a big part in these preliminary races.

Yes, of course I was referring to the final victory, not the individual regatta. Anyway, today we saw that in these conditions (little wind and somewhat rough sea) Team New Zealand doesn't look very fast.

Not sure you can say the Kiwi boat wasn't fast. Just a split second error will affect time over course and hence calculated speed. If you come off the foil even once, you've lost the race—unless your opponent does the same!

It's going to take a lot of heats to determine if any boat has a meaningful speed advantage.
