Growing up in the middle of this constant Alabama/Auburn jihad has made me hate the damn sport with an undying fervent passion. It's practically a religion for the brainless here. People will actually fight over jokes made at their teams here. We've actually had to make it a rule that football, religion, and politics cannot be discussed in the shop, because none of these things can be "discussed," they fight over it. I hate it almost as much as I hate politics.
I tried to get into it, but all I see are guys in big plastic suits bumping onto each other. And, they barely ever even show the cheerleaders. You can't tell me that this is for real men. Men shouldn't spend so much time watching men. Give me girls beach volleyball any day over football.

I was never a sports fan when it came to watching any sport other than golf. I play golf, and that's why it interests me. I moved to Atlanta a year ago from AZ, and I own a GA Bulldogs hat and wear it on occasion out of the house. To the point of others talking about the SEC, if you wear the colors be prepared to talk football. I get so many people just shout "Go Dawgz" or start chatting me up about some player on the football team. I just nod and say "yeah it'll be interesting".
To cosmic's point about the crazy fans, I never understood the fanatical urge to actually get into physical altercations because of an allegiance to a team.

I was way too small (weight) to play football, ever. But I'd be fibbing to say I haven't gotten totally absorbed in a NFL game

now and then. I think the head injury issue, and maybe now the domestic violence issue, raise questions about the cultural

worship of the game, but in a good game, all that seems far away. It's the time I cannot devote to it. I've had family members

who have always had "a game" on, mostly football. And at holidays, the men sit around mute and watch games while their one

opportunity to communicate with family goes down the tube. So I readily admit the fascination and allure, but I can't do it.

@boss first thanks to your son for his service. It is the men and women like him and countless others who serve and have served that are true heroes. Sometimes we forget that when watching sports. Second that is a great story. I have always loved the game more than any one team, and the people who played it the right way and respected the game. I will watch more to watch a Peyton Manning or a Michael Jordan than root a team on...except my Mizzou Tigers.

That is a great story, trailboss! I also hope your son gets well soon. PTSD is nothing to mess with.
I used to watch football all the time but have grown out of it. The wife likes the Patriots and I have been a Steelers fan ever since the days of Bradshaw, Mean Joe Green, etc. If either of those two teams are playing, we may watch it. Never been into college football and living on Columbus, Ohio makes people think you are weird.
We are getting into hockey though, especially the wife.

A prerequisite for viewing a football game, unless I actually attend one, is actually turning on the television. I rather enjoy the quiet, and I'd rather grab a book. Shortly after 9/11, I quit watching TV. I turned it off and left it off. It's only been in the past couple of years, that I'll turn on NHK (Japanese news/equivalent of PBS, due to having lived over there for ten years), or I'll watch something on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. Still and all, I'd rather read a book, or build something in the wood shop.

I follow two sports- the Tour de France and Volvo Open Ocean 70 racing....If football, basketball, or baseball depended on guys like me, they'd be in serious trouble...

I watch a favorite NFL team. I don't watch a game just because it is Monday night or Thursday night football. If the NFL becomes more of a world league I will probably be less interested.
I rarely watch much college football.

I have no problem with anyone that does but it's not for me. I don't permit anything to occupy space in my mind or heart if it doesn't pay rent.

I suffer from PTSD, myself. It's just my new "normal." Some days are good, some days, not so much. Meh....
The only sport I used to watch religiously, was boxing. But even that got stupid. I got sick of seeing guys fight their hearts out and lose, because of shitty judging and the lack of a national commission to vet the idiot judges that are apparently blind in one eye and can't see outta' the other. Hrmph...
After Tyson turned the heavyweight division into an ugly joke, I had enough. The very last time I watched, I got to see Lennox Lewis beat the snot outta' Tyson, and Iron Mike decided to "fade away into Bolivian." /eye roll....
/shrug... TV: Who cares...

Patrick thank you my sentiments exactly. I too growing up was either walking outside identifying things trees, bugs, plants and home reading. I hated objects being thrown at me, I think my panic disorder came from being forced to play dodgeball in school. BARBARIC

I agree with northernneil. 5 seconds of play with 30sec break inbetween? Ridiculous. I can barely stand to watch the SuperBowl. I will admit that seeing a game live is better, but not by much. I will never understand this nation's fascination with the game. It's almost like a cult.
I watch hockey and baseball, but not so much anymore.

This is good to know. For a little bit there I thought I was the only one who could care less about football.

I don't watch football baseball or hockey. Complete and utter waste of money. Why not send some of that money to military men and women, firefighters, police officers.......
