It's taken me too long, but I've recently noticed that one of my tobacco-purchase habits indicates a lack of common sense, or a tinge of insanity, on my part. When ordering from P&C or SP, I'll sit for a half hour and hem and haw over adding another $8-&11 tin to my order for a meager total of three or four per order, feeling I shouldn't spend that extra amount despite the looming tobaccolypse. Then I'll drop the same amount on each of a handful of cigars like it's nothing.

One cigar versus a tin of tobacco. This should be obvious. Part of the problem is that I enjoy cigars almost as much as pipes, but that "almost" is an important one in this case.

I'm sure the older and wiser here have already figured this out, but I'm curious as to whether anyone else does this. I myself plan on showing a little more prudence in the future.

Now I'm comparing my humidor to my tiny cellar...

In the long run both will go up in price and one will give you significantly more smokes for the price. Maybe just cut your cigar purchases down to a few here and there and focus on the cellar. This is coming from someone who only smokes a stick or two a year, so take it with a grain of salt.

I'm definitely not debating whether you're right, and that's the plan. I may even use my humidor for pipe tobacco and stop keeping sticks on hand, since at school there's a B&M in walking distance. I just never noticed the inconsistency in how I viewed the cost of each.

You are not crazy. I will often drop an item to save 8 bucks on an order, only to spend it on a different order the next day. Or maybe we are both crazed. I already have more tobacco than I'll ever smoke. And 76 pipes to boot.

You're not the only crazy one here. I hesitate pulling the trigger on a $400ish Rad Davis or Bruce Weaver, who's work I love. Then I'll spend $500+ in a matter of weeks on a couple of meers and a Luciano sandblasted.

I hem and haw over the price of adding a $10 tin, and then add a bunch of pipe cleaners to the order just to push it over $95 or $100 to get the free shipping. Crazy? Maybe.

Yes, add my name to your list. Although I may not be as crazy as cautious - being that I am a Canadian ordering from the States and as long as I keep it under a certain weight I do not have to pay the exorbitant customs and import fees. Method in my madness!

Got to add me in there, too.
I have often saved an order waiting for the $100 minimum to save the 8 or 9 shipping cost, then go ahead by adding pipe cleaners in to it, and then finding out that I left some tins out that I needed to get...
I do believe that I'm spending less on tobacco each month than I used to spend on cigars, except for those damn pipes...

I'm with you erichbaumer. And Rich. And others who look for the deals. I used to smoke cigars in between pipe smokes. I have stopped that and now smoke an occasional cigar, taking down the humidor, so to speak.
Like rigmedic, I have now accumulated more pipes and tobacco than I will live long enough to smoke. Thus, I am really slowing that down as well in front of the FDA tobaccolypse.
Having said that, though, when I see a good deal at P&C, SP or Noggins, I leap. And, mind you, this is in the face of a wife who monitors my purchases like a veritable hawk with talons out.
