Probably not tolerance going up in a one time event. More likely you had higher stress hormones which would mitigate the normal impact. Yet, that is a way to build tolerance…. by keeping smoking UNTIL you get the desired effect.

I had a rough day at work yesterday, so after a light dinner I was craving a little nicotine to help me unwind. I loaded a MM 5th Avenue Diplomat with C&D Cigar Leaf, rated as a strong blend, and settled in for my smoke. I do not have a high tolerance for nicotine so I expected to be feeling it by mid bowl, but nothing. I smoked the bowl to the bottom with absolutely no effects. I have smoked this tobacco from the same jar many times and always felt it by midway, and usually had to put the pipe down before it was done. I waited a while to see if it was a delayed response thing, but still nothing. Well, I wanted that little buzz so I packed a Sav 104 tight with Five Brothers from a jar I had smoked from before with good nicotine content. I figured a few puffs and I would be good to go. I smoked over half the bowl with absolutely no effect. Usually, half a bowl of Five Brothers has me feeling it pretty good. I should have been sick at this point. I stopped there because I didn’t want to risk a delayed reaction overdose event, but I never felt a thing, not in the slightest. I suspect my next go will be the same response as usual, but this one time was very strange.

Has anyone else ever had a spontaneous increase in nicotine tolerance, either temporary or permanent?
I can only speak of my own experience. For me I definitely can smoke more often without the nicotine effects than I did when I started smoking a pipe. So nicotine tolerance or something like that is definitely happening. That said I'm still afraid to smoke Royal yacht anytime but just before bed; that stuff will make you dizzy and you will want to sleep. My advice is to maybe try not smoking a few days lowering the amount of nicotine you have in you and then smoke the same tobacco to see if there is a difference. If you try that please share if these was any change. I also notice that if I smoke slowly I will be just nicely chilled, not sick, not dizzy; just chilled. If I smoke more quickly the metric changes and I am more likely to get dizzy, tired.

I suspect you are correct with the stress hormone theory. I had a very stressful day at work. The next day was not stressful and I was back to my normal baseline with regard to my nicotine tolerance.

I smoke one pipe and four cigars a day, but a Peterson Pub Pipe packed with EMP always hits me. It can depend on alot of factors, fatty emal, how much alcohol is in your system, are you smoking with something sugary. I think the morning EMP hits me because I always have an empty stomache and only drink black coffee with my morning pipe.
