First, I am not arguing with you Brian, I just found the first article you linked strange in saying (I am not from Canada) the thieves were armed. It read wrong to me.

Having re-read it after reading the second article you linked I now see that these appear to be criminal gangs of dubious origin. As for the rest :

So, I take it from your comments that you're under the impression that gun restrictions should result in criminals not having them. That would be illogical so I am not under that impression.

As for "misinformation", it's the Toronto police saying these criminals are armed...as well as multiple news reports on the ongoing spate of these incidences. That doesn't mean it couldn't have been misinformation.

In the US the highest violent crime areas are those with the strictest gun laws and vice versa.

If I were you I would take adequate measures to protect my family and myself; it doesn't appear that Police have found a solution to the problem yet ... unless there are more articles.

Stay safe ! P.S. This is a touchy subject today as I live in a suburban area and last night someone was swearing loudly in the street and racing off ... we don't do that here (previously) ... My neighbor who is heavily 'protected' turned on all his flood lights !

I didn't take it as though you were arguing with me...just trying to clarify.

And to further clarify...I only posted that first post of mine in order to point out the utter absurdity of the Toronto policeman's advice to the citizenry.

It's such a powerful combination that Mexico and much of South America are now controlled by criminal cartels over entire regions. Many of those gangs are now setting up shop in the US.

Gee, maybe allowing countless numbers of completely unvetted young men to pour across the southern border on a daily basis isn't such a great idea.

By its nature law enforcement is reactive. Always a bit behind the "curve."
I've read a few more detailed articles on the problem sited since posting above. Apparently there are three organized crime syndicates directing the theft of luxury autos in Toronto so that a vehicle is stolen every 40 minutes; 12000 last year alone. Police are purchasing 4 more helicopters at $36mil and coordinating with border security and others. The legislature has stiffened penalties for auto theft. A raid on a port facility recovered many cars and guns. Toronto was a target for luxury cars and SUVs. Insurance claims are up 319%.
People are hiring security firms to take measures and installing tracking chips, etc.

Other than hiring private security to block each end of the street at night, I don't know how much more the residents can do.

Welcome to South Africa. That's exactly what has evolved there.

"Got stuff? You better build and live in a fortress, or you won't have it long!" has become the rule in the cities. Private security guards and bodyguard tag-alongs when you step outside, as well.

How could such a situation be emerging in Canada? The legendary Canadian "laid back" attitude and friendliness, together with increasingly progressive government policies, is proving to be honey to the world's predator bees.

@Kobold Now I’d never condone theft, but maybe it can be looked at more empathetic and positive, they took pipe and pipe tobacco, hmm could it of been a pipe smoker, probably not, just need to make a buck, but if they keep it, maybe that pipe will also turn their life around. 🤔

Sorry to hear… :(

Be well! 🤙 ❤️

Just venting here, but last night I had a pipe, tamper and some pouches of tobacco stolen out of my car. Dummy me forgot to lock my car because I was in a hurry. Nothing that can’t be replaced but still a bummer. It was probably teenagers but I have no way of knowing that. I hope they get some wicked tongue bite!
In some cities they tell you not to lock your car, you know so when shitbags walk down the street breaking into every car without fear of being prosecuted maybe they won't smash your window when they steal all your shit.

Canada is in the middle of a disinformation campaign regarding crime to try to keep you dirty Americans out.

Well they also left my change and took my key to my mailbox so my empathy for them is pretty non existent.
