Just a quick question. Does anybody know a tried and true method of achieving a sand blasted appearance without using a sandblaster? (Even rather off the wall possibilities.)
I assume you mean besides rustication, done with a tool like this followed by a wire brush?

Rustication of a certain kind comes close enough that people often confuse the two...
Have you checked out/asked at the Pipe Maker's Forum: pipemakersforum.com - Index page - http://www.pipemakersforum.com/forum/ ?
Not that we're chasing you out, but some of the guys over there who don't come here might have some good ideas.

I once “handblasted” one of my pipes using a dremel and a few other things to get somewhat of an authentic sandblast look.
Yes, I used a round carving bit.Do you remember the attachment used? (Just out of curiosity.)
Earlier this year, I saw a couple of pipes from a west Asian pipe maker that had been treated with a yakisugi/shou sugi ban technique. Risky, but the resulting texture was very similar to that of a sandblast. I'm ashamed that I don't remember the name of the maker now.
That's one example of the technique, but there's more that can be done with it. A little dye and some sanding can give interesting results.
