Dammitt!! Was working on my morning cup of tea & bowl of Walnut match blend.......started picking up some kind of spices or subtleties in the blend towards the roof of my mouth.....then, once I started thinking about it & what I was doing, I blew it...now, nothing but hot air & smoke....guess it's just one of those things that sneak up on you when you're not paying attention.....

What happens is that we start getting flavor as the flame dies back (the cherry was probably dissipating), driving the essential oils into the smoke. We don't actually taste the smoke, but the oils dissipating around the burning cherry that goes into the smoke. Then, when we get a hint of flavor, we puff, thinking that by giving it more oxygen, we'll get more flavor, but all we get is smoke, killing the flavor with the excessive heat.

It's counter-intuitive, like everything else in this hobby, but by smoking your pipe on the verge of going out, you get more nicotine and more flavor. When you get the pipe to making more smoke, you loose both the nicotine and the taste.

Well, that explains why when I throw some pipe tobacco into my cigarette injector to make some quick butts, they all taste like regular cigarettes, no matter what blend I use....good to know, now I know to stop using the better stuff (well, "better" by my standards, still lawn clippings to you guys) and just get some real "super-value-it doesn't matter what flavor" stuff for cigarette purposes....

Sometimes when the pipe goes out, I'll use the pick thing, and mix the stuff in the bowl up, bringing the soggy stuff at the bottom up top, and then I just tamp the whole mess down & re-light....is that OK, or am I committing a huge breach of etiquette?

Using a filter, so I don't have to worry about getting a mouth full of ash....when I'm on eBay, I see pipe screens....what exactly are they for? I'm guessing to keep the ash at bay, if you're not using a filter?

P&C's Match Walnut blend is tasty stuff, one of my favorites!

I do this occasionally as well, works good.
+1 on the 9mm filters.
