This is interesting. A fellow without smoking experience at all, who likes to be athletic and active, wants to voluntarily learn to smoke tobacco in a pipe.

The impetus is his inheritance of his Grampa's pipes.

Everyone has a helpful suggestion. I think the pipe and the clock work together. They require time. They take time.

What I would love to know is; what sort of pipes did your Gramps smoke?

Pipe smoking is obviously enjoyed by most of us here. We love to share that enjoyment as much as we can with each other and with Newbies.

My grandfather's (Pe'Pe's) pipes were 1970's Medco's and cob and two graphite Venturi's : )

I've tried a few different blends and leaves so far but what I've noticed is that each individual flavor satisfies me while I'm smoking but it is the tobacco taste that lingers and gives me the urge to fill the next bowl.
Additionally you can experiment with the drinks that you accompany the pipes. I've found herbal teas and filter coffee -with extra sugar- compliments them beautifully.
