for me there is a huge difference. I find matches the best. It's just nearly impossible to ruin a smoke with a match. A zippo is pretty good and a bic is fine if you're careful with it. But the hotter the flame the easier it is to cook the taste right out of the tobacco and burn your tongue. Again you can get a good light with any of these flames but matches are certainly the most forgiving. In fact I don't think it's a coincidence that pipe smoking was most popular when matches where the main way to light tobacco.

Could have been the tobacco pipe combo, but was wondering if different flame types prompted different performance.
Basically it boils down to soft flame vs hard flame. Soft flame, like a BIC or matches is essentially the same and not as hot as a hard flame. Hard flames, like those of a torch lighter, are weapons of pipe destruction, and cigar destruction as well as they are way too hot. However, they are popular with incompetent people.

When two things are different, one has to be better than the other. However, they can be treated equal in most cases. Zippo, Bic, match, Old Boy.. Different source of flames, but in a hand that's used to them can light a pipe without an issue. But a cigar torch is just a bitch. You just have to kick it till it's broke and dump it.
