Since I've started smoking a pipe I've bought more tobacco than I'll likely ever smoke in my lifetime. Not because it's too much but because I've bought a lot I thought I liked, but then ended up not liking. OGS and Dreams of Kaddath being two that come to mind on that list. It took about 1.5 years to realize how I determine what I actually like. Its not a mental choice for me I don't think...it's a desire or a craving. I love the flavor of Newminster 400, bought a pound, never went back to it. Mentally I like the flavor but I can do without it and so I rarely ever grab it. My desire seems to be related to a variety of factors most of which are not really conscious. Nic hit, desirable flavor, enjoyable when sipped, enjoyable when pushed, quick to prepare, all seem to be factors that keep me coming back time and time again naturally. As of right now, there are only 4 blends that meet these requirements for me - Erinmore, Royal Yacht, Nightcap, and St Bruno. I am confident I could only smoke these 4 and be quite happy. Right now I could smoke St Bruno all day everyday, easy. I'll still explore a bit I think, but not much. And my standard for cellaring will be much more strict.

The advent of the internet really screwed all this up for us old timers. Used to be you had about 5 codger blends to choose from at the local drug store and that was it unless you went to a tobacco guy that blended (but many of us didn't have one nearby) . Then when companies like SP started selling online, it screwed all that up...it's taken me the better part of 15 years to zero in on about 6 blends I smoke regularly now.

Long time lurker here. This is something I have tried to find also - the one precious blend that I could always rely on. I entered this hobby wanting to try everything, and it got overwhelming. In 2 years or so I have sampled over 150 blends. I could hardly remember which one was which, sometimes dumping a bowl when I realized I had filled my pipe with the wrong blend as I too go by craving for a certain taste. An Excel spreadsheet helped sorting blends a bit.

What I finally forced myself to do was whittle down my blends substantially to a handful. What I ended up with was: Luxury Twist Flake, Davidoff Flake Medallions, Prince Albert, & Sutliff Vanilla Custard. Each unique in its own right.

By the way - St Bruno is in fact delicious. I keep that one around for the odd occasion too.

Not to give you more to try...but if you haven’t tried the RR version of SB you might want to. Same stuff, much cheaper and with a bit more topping.

I’m with you on Erinmore and Royal Yacht, too. Some of my favs. There are a bunch of others that I would be very happy with but I tend to move around Peterson 3P, University Flake, GH Ennerdale are a few others I am usually pretty happy with. There are many and I haven’t even gotten to the English blends.

I was watching a YouTube video of a guy showing off his tobacco cellar which he considered modest. It was anything but modest, It’s an illness TAD. It was pure insanity! The video opens with him smoking granger from a pouch and him almost apologetically saying, “don’t knock it til you’ve tried it.”

Thousand of dollars of tobacco within his reach and he’s smoking, enjoying and defending his OTC.

SMH at the absurdity.
