"Avoid Condor Plug as it has really gone to hell in a hand basket."
Is it really that bad Simon? I really love the stuff but am now down to a mere two 25g blocks of the proper Irish stuff.
Regards,
Jay.

I've looked into the Captain Earles line, but notably most of those blends contain a heavy dose of latakia. I find that I'm not a big fan of latakia, at least in heavy doses.I love the smell, not so much the taste. I have a tin of GLP Chelsea Morning and that contains what I think is a moderate amount of latakia as well as orientals. Perhaps it's the orientals that I don't like. I have yet to acquire a fine tuned palette to distinguish the difference yet.
I do however enjoy SG Navy flake. The latakia pokes through from time to time, and I also have puffed on MM965 a few bowls and I find that these two blends hit the spot when it comes to a light latakia. Also heard SG Squadron leader isn't too heavy.
I'm really digging virginias, dark fired. Have yet to try any blends with a decent amount of perique and

Revor plug is one of my favourites but might be a little too strong for some people's tastes, yachtsman plug looks interesting but I haven't tried it yet and of course you have all the Gawith twists which although not plugs are in the same sort of family.

It has often been said, but probably doesn't hold true for all, that when a blend is presented in both pressed or tightly compacted form and ready for the pipe, or broken or otherwise prepared for the bowl, that the strength of the flavors in the plug/coin/robe is somewhat greater.

JKP for instance comes 'both' ways.
As for Captain Earle's, I've got some aged "Private Stock" and although it does have latakia, it is mellow and tasty.

A similar 'cake', to the above is Russ' TasyKake, however, I believe that to be a 'one off', if the marketing was truthful.

I'm not sure if a crumble cake can turn in to a plug even after it's aged. It's two different ways of manufacturing. There is just something about aged plug tobacco that I love.

Traditionally, plugs were made from whole leaf tobacco, and crumble cake from cut tobacco. But those lines have been blurred somewhat. I think slices can be had from cuts of either plug or cake. So, under those definitions, you can't make a plug out of cake.
