This is a sensitive question, I know, but some people who visit can detect tobacco smoke even though I smoke only in my study. The central air circulation system, I've been told, pulls up the smoke smell from my room and circulates it throughout the house. Therefore I've considered getting an air purifier. My question is, are these purifiers actually effective? I'm thinking about getting a Honeywell purifier because it functions quietly and has reusable filters. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks for reading.

Thank you for the advice. (What does PITA stand for, by the way?) I don't think we can afford major problem fixes like consulting with heating and cooling system experts, but the room that acts as my study is fairly small, and a air purifier might actually help, if I understand you properly. The room is sealed off from the rest of the house when the door is closed; the study is connected to my bedroom, which you have to go through to enter the main house. (The study was an addition. I do all my work there, and pipe smoking aids me in my work, which is writing. The only connection the study has to the rest of the house are the two intake vents.)Thanks again!

Well, I suppose this is the best place to start posting since I have legitimate input.
Look only here for air filter/purifier reviews: http://www.air-purifier-power.com/
The gentleman who operates that site is unadulterated by adds and is extremely thorough. He'll tell you if what you're looking into is worth the money or not. In an air purifier, you get what you pay for. He has reviewed most of them.
I own this one: http://www.amazon.com/Rabbit-Air-SPA-700A-Ultra-Quiet-Purifier/dp/B003CT55YW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
While I do not smoke in the house (or yet at all actually), I can verify that after 18 months of use it does it's job very very well.
I would guess in a smokers case you would want to look into a system with a high amount of carbon in order to help reduce the smell. Though, I have not researched them with smoking in mind. I have three long haired cats indoors and the unit I own does an excellent job of reducing any air born allergens put off by them. It also does a great job with odors and dust in general.

I'm wanting to smoke in the house when I move in to the place we're remodeling. So, last summer while I was staying in Chandler for work I got one of the smaller air purifiers from Target. I also made sure to buy the filter specifically for smoke.
The room I was renting was a master bedroom with an attached bath, about 800 sq ft. I put it on low about ten minutes before smoking and then on high while smoking. Afterwards I left it on low for an hour or two. It took the smell away very well. I was paranoid when I went back to collect my things and move back to Vegas that the smell would be there and I'd lose my deposit. I was totally wrong. There wasn't any smoke smell at all and I did get my deposit back.
I'd definitely look into remedying the problem a bit by getting one of those smaller ones first and seeing how that helps.

Well, I dunno.
My wife hates, hates, hates, the smell of tobacco. She says it coats everything in the house. When we moved into our "new" old house about six years ago, she said I could smoke in my downstairs office. Since I, too, am a freelance writer, I thought, finally, I get my own room to not only write my stories, but also to smoke my beloved pipes.
Hold on. The smoke went up through a couple of old ceiling vents. I shut them off, but they would not close completely. I covered them. I still got loud complaints.
I installed an exhaust window fan in the one window, opened wide the French doors to the office that walks out to a section beneath the house.
Still got complaints.
I bought a $300 air purifier and turned it on full blast.
More complaints.
Finally, an ultimatum. No more smoking in the house because it will devalue the house when we begin to sell.
Now, I'm outside, in all kinds of weather. The purifier sits over in a corner of the office, unused. The exhaust fan is quiet and unused. The doors to the office are closed.
I sit forlorn.

I have owned the Dynamic CT500 Air Cleaner for five years with absolutely excellent results. I recommend it. Visit their site here: http://www.my-air-purifier.com/site/678219/product/CT500 The price is $997.00 USD. It is worth the investment. It is quiet. My wife can sit next to me on a sofa watching a movie and not even notice I am smoking the pipe. We are both happy about this investment!

For smoking in the house two things are needed, one is a Hepa smoke removal system, the other is a professional grade Ozinator. It is useless to just remove the smoke without getting rid of the smell. To do it right you need to invest close to 1000.00 for both units. I spent 20 years removing smoke and the smell in my pool hall so I do know quite a bit about the subject. The size of the room dictates the size of the units you will need. Hepa units are rated in CFM's which mean how often the air in the room is exchanged. With an Ozinator it is not healthy to be in the room while it is running.

When my father is around I always turn on the air purifier haha so that the room and the kids won't smell tobacco.

The kids love their grandparents that they still play with them even if I tell them not to when my father is having his relaxation time by smoking his favorite Cuban cigar. I love it when my Dad stops smoking his cigar just for his grandkids because that's the only time we see him stop smoking. :)
