Is the second one for another room or did you just need more power?
Oh the first one, I can’t remember what happened to it, if it died, or for some odd reason we stopped using it. It’s a mystery to me… LOL 😝

But for an inexpensive purifier that thing was amazing.

I bought it because there’s an article out there written by a professional, in like particles, or dust, or filtration, I can’t remember, but it showed a lot of research in it, and how it was superior to a lot of others.

After havIng such good success with it, I figured I’d just stick to Coway, and I really like the idea of these green hepa filters for more serious bacteria, pollen, and viruses, etc…

Look at this on Covid;

And, with the mpox now out there, I’m hoping that Coway will be a company now and in the future to continue putting out good filters for viruses…

Do you have a link to the article?

I'm looking at a variation on a Corsi-Rosenthal box, using 4 MERV-13 filters taped together with a box fan drawing air through them. That will provide about 1100 CFM of particulate-trapping goodness, more than enough to keep up with my piping out in the garden shed smoking lounge. Anyone else tried this?

First picture doesn't load for me but that's an interesting idea. What do those filters cost?

(Fixed the photo)

I found a set of 6 MERV-13 filters for $33 on Amazon (significantly cheaper than buying locally, in my experience). Note, MERV 14+ is recommended for medical settings and smoking lounges, but that level requires professional-strength fans. I'm setting this up in an uninsulated garden shed, so I don't exactly need operating-room airscrubbing power.

This simple filter/fan setup was suggested as a good solution to wildfire smoke, and the original model I saw mounted just a single 20x20x1 filter onto a the intake side of a box fan. The common complaint was that the fan motor was being overstrained due to the decreased airflow due to the MERV-13 filter, so this solution increases airflow dramatically and relieves strain on the fan motor.

The general recommendation for filter replacement with the 1-filter version is 3 months, but as this modified version has 4 filters, and I'll really only be running this during my smoking sessions (maybe 3 hours/day for 5 days a week), I should get much more than 3 months out of a set of filters. I wouldn't be surprised if I can go a whole year between replacements.

Thanks for the write up! If it holds up to your level of smoking it would probably serve me for multiple years.

I know this is mainly about air purification but have you noticed the decrease in the lingering smell?

I haven't built this yet (the filters are due in on Sunday), so I can't comment from experience for a while, but by removing 98%+ of the particulate matter from the air as these filters are rated to do, it certainly should help address the lingering smell, I expect.

Sorry, that was several years ago…

I’d say if you’re tight on money, these are $167 right now on Amazon. I really liked mine, hopefully you will too…

Link On Amazon:
Coway Airmega AP-1512HH
I’ve got the same one and it’s great, though I do not smoke indoors. I use it for general dust control and air quality. For a smoking room, however, I think something with activated charcoal as well as a hepa filter would be needed.

The New York Times product review team has rated this the best filter for many years running.

If you look back at the pics on Amazon, there is a black filter listed as a Deodorization Filter, that sits in front of the Hepa filter.

From what I’ve seeing/read they are a Carbon Filter, if you scroll down on this link below there are 4; Starter, Smoke, Allergen, Pet, that sit in front of the Hepa I belive.

You should be ok with the ‘Intense Smoke’ filter… LOL 😆

Didn’t actually know they had different variants of that prefilter - that’s cool. However, if it’s got any activated carbon, I’d be surpised. It’s essentially 5mm thick scotchbrite-looking material on the normal Coway filters. Even if it had activated carbon on the intense smoke variant, the mass would be very low - and mass is what counts with activated carbon. You want many lbs of the stuff, and this thing would be on the order of a couple of oz.
