I bought some of the 2012 tins from foggymountain and it was THE smoke that taught me the value of aging.

The flavors move from the mid to the deeper end of the taste spectrum, gaining (for lack of a better descriptor) almost a chocolate covered cherry trait. The last third of an aged flake, folded and stuffed, is, to me, what pipe smoking is all about.

Sounds fabulous. I'm going to pull the trigger and have a bit to enjoy and a small amount for the cellar.

How does flake vs ready rubbed affect the experience? Just curious. I know there are a lot of proponents of flakes on here, but I thought people just end up rubbing the flakes out regardless (I fold them).
The flavor of the flake is more potent. The ready rubbed has had time to air out.

All of my ODF is from 2012. I really enjoy what the age has done to this one. It is smoother, creamier and full of flavor. I have a pipe that is dedicated to this one and it is a great combo.

Does it tend to ghost a pipe, that you know of?

I smoke it in my Virginia pipes. I do not get any ghost. It isn't as strong a flavor as latakia at all.
Oh OK. Speaking of Latakia...about a month or so ago, I layed out a little skiff mixture on some paper towel to dry out on the kitchen table for a couple hours, and to this day if you put your nose up to the table where it was sitting, you can smell campfire. Lol. My wife was so pissed

I usually switch between latakia blends and aromatics in the same pipes. I kind of like getting a hint of an aro in my latakia, and a hint of latakia in my aromatics... but, I don't think latakia ghosts as hard as aromatics or lakelands. I can chase off a residual latakia blend in a pipe with two bowls of Virginia. But, aromatic pipes will carry that shit to the grave. puffy

But, I know what you mean @gervais, once I have packed a bowl with latakia, my fingers will smell like a campfire for a long time.

I bought 5 lbs of RR, and 1lb of flake 3 yrs ago. The RR has less flavor and WOW factor to me, but I just love flakes. IF anyone wants to trade flakes for RR, hit me up!

The only ODF I've had is the RR version, which is pretty good, which I've had fresh and at 3.5 years after purchase. It definitely becomes tangier with a few years of age. The flavoring is less notable with age, IMO. If you like it fresh, you'll like it aged. If you aren't a big fan of it fresh, I wouldn't bother aging it. I prefer Bold Kentucky, but if I were buying to age, I would go with ODF just because it has a higher percentage of VAs.
