The bulk are professional politicians who have never held a real world job, followed naturally by lawyers. I have always believed that to serve in the political area one must have held employment in the real world for at least 15 years.
Oh, Condor -- you hit on a favorite theme of mine. I just haven't studied it enough to say anything worth listening to. But I recall when Bill Clinton ran for office, someone mentioned that the age of "real people" in politics was over. Everyone running for office was a boob-to-tube politician. They had passed the bar or been listed as a member of a board somewhere, but they hadn't started their careers as "average Joe's." Their sites were always set on the next throne of political power.
But to verify that, boy, I'd have to know a whole lot more politicians and their work histories than I do.

And don't forget "researchers."
I was reading this tongue-in-cheek essay some years ago about what America really needs isn't more FDA legislation but healthier rats. Everything we feed the ones we have gives them cancer.
I used to write for researchers at NIH and Browns. They'd give me their work; I'd write to the style of wherever they were publishing it, polish it up for them (mainly for foreigners publishing in American journals, etc). I got to know some of them pretty well. And yeah, they live from project to project. They need someone to come up with things like this for them to devise studies.
But I also know from my experience in the education field, some of it is just wasted money.
There was a $2M study that concluded some children have trouble spelling. Serious. (Give me $2M and I'll tell you some can't count well, either).
Another study (don't know the grant size) proved that yes, there are snowflakes that are exactly the same (I mean, stands to reason: bazillions of flakes, with limited characteristics of water and environment? Permutations run out eventually).
So that someone wants a long-term study verifying that smoke residue in a living environment causes the same cancers as are associated with smoking... That's a gold mine for some university folks.

12pups your reminding me of George Carlin! In all my years of pipe smoking I have noticed that there is always someone who wants to complain. Whilst I live in the US I was reminded of the last UK General Election where a small and particularly unpleasant minority party of the right was garnering large votes and local representation. The answer of one politician was that the government should consider banning said party to protect the voters from making the 'wrong' choice. I have always believed that the greatest revolutionaries that enter politics become part of the system and structure it to their own benefit and not that of their constituents. Personally I have always believed that political parties should not exist and people should vote on an occupational basis so that system would throw up a truly representative chamber of informed opinion. It would certainly end the party racket!

LOL
I've always liked the way England approaches politics. They keep the Queen locked up in a big fancy building with guards posted outside in big furry hats who make sure she doesn't get out and say anything disruptive.
Send us some of those guards to stick around the capitol, please.
:)

Okay. Had to look up that 4th hand smoke stuff.
4th hand smoke
Article Warns of Dangers of "Fourth-Hand" Smoke

An article at Bottom Line/Personal, based on an interview with a tobacco control researcher, warns the public about the potential hazards of fourth-hand smoke.
What is fourth-hand smoke, you ask?
Why, it is smoke exposure resulting from being in the presence of someone who themselves was in the presence of a smoker.
According to the article: "There are at least 250 poisonous gases, chemicals and metals in cigarette smoke, and they can cling to the hair and clothing of people who don’t smoke themselves but spend time among smokers. Young children (and adults, including at-risk adults, such as those with asthma, heart disease or COPD) may be exposed to these toxins when they are near people who smoke or who have spent time with smokers."
