One pipe, then if you really enjoy this thing, another one. After that better try a cob. Oh and save up for a nice meer. Then a meer lined briar just for comparison. Falcons are a bit gimmicky, every collection needs one. Don't forget the clay! All your bowls are quite big, so time to shop for a couple of smaller bowled pipes, maybe a nose warmer too for smaller pockets. On the flip side there is use for a huge bowl on occasion, maybe something with a cool blast....

I only had one pipe at a time for the first 8 years I smoked a pipe, first a Dr. Grabow, then I moved up to a Big Ben. There was no internet and I didn’t have a pipe mentor and since you only smoke one at a time, I saw no need for more than one... that has since changed.
I had two Grabows and a Big Ben for the first decade.?

Started with a basket pipe that i bought 20 years ago, smoked a few times and put away. Then two years ago i started pipe smoking more regularly and have 18 pipes including a few cobs, but mostly pipes in the $60 - 120 range. I am always browsing but as I dont smoke that often i am finding that many of the pipes i already have may not even be fully broken in. So i am resisting the temptation to buy any more. The choices seem endless, and i plan on reserving my buying for special occasions in the future and will focus on higher end pipes.

I agree with 20 as an ideal number (not including cobs). After getting rid of some pipes I never smoked, I’ve got about 15 briars, plus about 15 cobs at any given time. I’d really like to pare my non-cob collection to about 10 higher end pipes and replace a few I’ve got now that I don’t like as much. I will say that all the pipes I have smoke well, pass cleaners, and are drilled well. If I never got another pipe, I’d still have plenty.

I currently have about 20 in rotation, another 40 or so waiting for a cleaning or repair. Only 7 were bought new from the show room. I need to keep a stock of estates to work on when the need arises to distract me from something. At three bowls or so a day, 21 would probably be much more than enough, but I have always been a collector of many different things. Plus I enjoy fixing things.

As many as you need. I'd say 2-3 for each style of blend you want to dedicate. I also refurbish and resell pipes to help support my PAD and make a little profit(tobacco money), so I might have more than I smoke at any given time. About 25 right now, maybe 10 I smoke on the regular.

I'm in favour of a larger number of good value estate finds instead of a few really expensive pipes as I find a "good smoker" doesn't necessarily mean a high price tag. Often estate pipes with a lower price tag(or steal of a deal you pick up at a flea market) doesnt mean a inferior pipe, but more so less quality control, so you gotta find those gems.

Also in buying cheap estate pipes(or any pipes for that matter)you gotta accept that some might just not cut it and aren't worth the resell, therefore dedicated to the "don't know what to do with this so I'll just hold on to it for now... Or forever" pile.
