State DOTD is cleaning ditches along the road to help aleivate drainage after the big flood. Crew knocked off and lowered tailgate and ate lunch underneath my Mullberry Tree. I was smoking my Baki Meer on porch. I went in the house and got some pound cake and brought it to them for desert. After thanking me the young man in the crew said you smoke Cobs? I replied I do, Briars and Meers also, he said I was in Afghastian ,And was in the Army, I said I" m a Vet too, and we sent a Bunch of Cobs and Tobbaco on the pipe forum I was in and I know MM MEERSCHAUM also did. He said small world isn't it. I thanked him for his service and he asked where I served, S Asia 1960 I replied, he looked questionably at me, I said Eisnhower put us there in 57 and not many people are aware of that. He got up and shook my hand. You might have got one of my Cobs I said, he replied I hope you realize how much that was appreciated.I nodded my head.

You are a patriot Sir, thank you
As a combat vet of Panama, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq, (a total of 6 yrs combat time) from 1985-2005 I always show my respect to Vietnam era Vets, war was much different then and those Vets did not receive the treatment they got

The pool of people who have been in military service has become smaller as the experience has become more prolonged and in some cases extremely intense, to put it politely. So this kind of a connection is extra important, the fact that this vet could encounter another vet and find a common thread in pipe smoking. It was common to feel isolated coming back from Vietnam, and I think that is even more prevalent among Iraq and Afghanistan vets.

How did I just now see this one? Very nice story Brad. I've never served, but many family members and a few friends have, and I respect every one of them for their service. Great post!
