Sable, thanks for your insight i appreciate it. I asked because i know you are far more knowledgeable than i on the subject to make an educated guesstimate. Yes, it is quite amusing watching capitalism in action with some of these characters that seem to have a forest full of money trees with absolutely no access or knowledge of the good ol' interwebs. Value is in the eye of the beholder.
Al, i believe you are right in the ballpark of what Primal had it priced for. Jason (BVB) also had a couple 8 dots that were up there near 1k. I forget the specifics behind them and their history, but i picked both of them up and had a closer look...VERY GENTLY AND CAREFULLY! Lol. Call me crazy, but i'd rather have that Tinsky!

Wow, it looks like I was out-snipped or didn't even bid! I just noticed that my $156.99 bid with 8 seconds doesn't show up at all on the bid list. The auction was then at $93 I believe. I wonder what happened? I completed and was immediately outbid (to $180-something). Then, as it closed, it went to the final $283. I outsmarted myself....

Here is one I did win in the final minute:

http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=390925602809&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2565
A bidder had a max bid of $125.50 but my last seconds bid eclipsed his max. That bidder put in his max bid five hours before the auction ended, making it easy for me to snipe. I think my max was $150 or so. So, there wasn't enough time for that bidder to submit a new max and fortunately, no one else eclipsed me on that one.
I would have went to war for that one!

There is another eBay phenomenon that bears mentioning....a shill or accomplice. BTW, I am accusing no nobody in the pipe community of this practice. It is, however, common in other eBay communities.
The seller has a shill who keeps nudging the bids up ... minimum bid by minimum bid. To fuel a bidding war. If one is selling in a community where most items go for $20-$50, a shill can encourage the selling price to go up for 10-25% -- a significant amount at that price level.
In another community, twice in the last three months, I've put in my max bid (usually on the low side), responded to other bids by upping it a dollar once or twice, lost, and then gotten a mail from the seller offering me the item at my last max bid. I suspect that there was a shill who placed the "winning" bid with the result of no actual sale. I simply ignored both offers.
Which is even more support for the idea of not engaging in bidding wars.

Hot auctions often don't conclude until the final seconds. I like to buy from Pipestud as I trust his presentation of the pipe without question; no funny business, like Photoshopping pipe pictures. Evidently many others do, too. His pipes often jump $150.00 in the last seconds, and thus waiting until then to bid, so that other shoppers don't have time to weigh the increase to keep pace with your bid, if indeed your bid is a pacesetter, becomes useless. His pipes may not sell at retail, but then don't go to sleep to be taken by a song.
