I was born and raised in New York City (Flatbush, Brooklyn to be exact). It’s just my gut instinct, that’s all. And you’re not being crass, you’re being straight forward. New Yorkers like that.

BTW, I no longer live there because I’ve experienced enough of this kind of insanity (caveat: I still love my city and my people; and miss them both, dearly).
I feel like saying somethings about some of the people who've been in charge of that city. And I won't cause who needs a can o worms but... Oh New York is an amazing place but like a lot of amazing places the great comes with a big helping of the not so great. One thing I've learned about life in general is that often it's the same thing that makes something great as what makes it terrible too. It's a vibrant insane place lots of amazing brilliant things happen there a lot of amazingly dark things too. Heck the country is kind of the same way. Peace and quite taken another way is boredom. Privacy also lets some really sick things grow unchecked. Just how life is. And people tend to think some utopian ideal can be achieved or even should be. Instead of seeing that as one of the folcrums life moves on :).

I find it somewhat disconcerting that various parts of the country find it important to keep creating special classes of victems instead of simply vigorously enforcing existing laws. I suppose it's simply because enacting laws is much cheaper than properly funding enforcement, judicial and prisons. Voters seem to embrace mindless laws over paying the financial costs of the proper delivery of public safety.
it's because some laws are for show and some are actually for doing something. What I love is we blame the politicians yet it's the public that eats up that shift sandwich and often makes the demands.

Very well stated. Once we come to the realization that the old myth about us living in a fallen world might very well be true, we then learn to accept things with a better frame of reference.

or you could go the other way and look at germs and insects and think about where this world has come from to get here. And suddenly it doesn't seem quite so messed up. Like walking into a mess and then being impressed when you see the before pictures.

Works equally well.

oh I also like to say I am for the spirit of this. For the idea that threatening or acting a certain way towards anyone that is genuinely more vulnerable then others should be treated more severely. That makes sense. I just don't know how well this law will work to do so and if it's not also just going to criminalize behavior isn't really felony level stuff.

New York is know for its peculiar…games. One of them, the knock out game is always perpetrated on the elderly (and/or women). Something of that nature should be classified as a felony and the punishment should be first, taking a running punch from Mike Tyson; then, if you survive that, jail time.

from my understanding more common in philly. But then again philly is in my opinion like new york but rougher. Also always felt like it was a man bites dog situation. Aberrant behavior gets reported where as normal everyday bad stuff just kind of is there.

In NY recent legislation will amend the Penal law to automaticity upgrade the charge of assault on anyone over the age of 65. Ex. Simple assault 3rd is a catch all that includes threats, no serious touching similar to Disorderly Conduct. The upgrade from a Misdemeanor to Felony makes it a more serious charge, often jail time

Was the senior smoking a pipe at the time? Did he have an oz of Penzance? Not sure what his relevants to this forum is? I’m sure there are plenty of other forums that are interested in that political topic. NY is a hot button of issues but I believe it revolves around pipes and tobacco.

Texas has that same law. Assault a person over 65 and it's a felony. I think it's great... especially since I will turn 65 in a few years

It's lazy lawmaking. I think most of us would support stricter penalties for assaults on the infirm (physically, mentally, or both). However, infirmity doesn't begin at an arbitrary age as the 65 yo boxer above shows. An age-based law is easier to prosecute since age can be easily and definitively established.
