I think people have it flipped. We should be teaching our sons to be hospitable, self-controlled, and respectful men, and to not be quick to offend.

It's important to teach our kids not to be assholes. It's also important to teach them to not have a victim mentality, be quickly offended and rush to look for protection.

Not to be disagreeable with the mods/admin, but this site has been very civil. I'm on here practically everyday and seldom if ever see anything worth reporting, in my honest opinion. But hey, they're the boss and I just hang out here.

The mods do a good job; this site is incredibly better than most of the online forums, which tend toward psychiatric wards. I'd report something that was apparently an outright scam, swindle, or dark web like. I'm not good at spotting the subtle wheedlers, of which there are a few. Frankly I've never reported anything, but I have joined in the chorus to call down suspicious posts.

Its one thing if sending or posting threatening messages or saying something overtly obscene, but I’ve never seen any even close to that in my short time here. Even the few temper flareups/arguments that happen get settled quickly in a gentlemanly way after a few replies. I don’t know what the mods actually delete, but it seems the community polices itself fairly well. The commercial infiltrations and the random questionable legislative post seem to be the worst we have to deal with.

No disrespect to OP, but I can’t see myself ever feeling the need to report a post. If I don’t like what I read I just ignore it and move on, or respond and disagree. I don’t want to censor or punish opinions just because I don’t personally agree with them. I don’t want to be a hall monitor.

Recent events and recent threads by mods have got me thinking on the subject of reporting.
There have been some cases where I think I should have, or at least I had the right to report something, but didn't.
Nobody wants to be a snitch.
Since I read the recent post from mods about general behaviour on forums I find I'm changing my mind. Maybe reporting isn't being a snitch, maybe mods are grown ups that can distinguish between whining and real trouble.
Maybe reporting offensive stuff is a way to keep this forum alive. What do you think?

For what its worth I fee the same way.

Hitting the report button limits the time one has to inject clever IBTL memes, just saying. And as to being killed by sound, all blast waves are sound technically, and what about the dreaded brown note?

Everyone need to do what they feel is right.

I taught my sons not to be a snitch or a rat.
I taught my daughters not to be a snitch but handle your business. You dont hit first but make dam sure you hit last. My dad always told me you will never win every fight but make sure they know you were there. It has been a rule that I have always tried to live by. I was teased alot as a kid for stuttering I never talked crap to people I would just whip your ass eventually it all stopped

There's a wise meme about it...
View attachment 57863
This meme reminds me of this one idiot I knew (not comparing you to him, just reminded me of him). He would spend hours arguing the dumbest things on Facebook and then for a while he used this meme every time he had to admit he lost an argument and then make fun of the other person for being so into arguing on Facebook. That guy who I knew in real life too and can confirm is a massive idiot with zero self awareness is the person I coined the phrase stupid with a caveat the caveat being that there is no hyperbole in the stories about him. For example the time he argued you're a moron if you believe that certain laws have any effect on anyone's behavior at all, and he hates those laws because they have a clear effect his behavior. The caveat is I really couldn't explain to him that he just called himself an idiot.
That said I am a huge fan of moderation. Without moderation you end up with a Facebook situation where people like the guy I mentioned dominate the conversation. And all discussions start becoming a screaming match where the biggest jerks ruin it for everyone except for their tiny little egos. Not having moderation actually does the opposite of allowing more to be said. It just limits what's said to the most extreme and abusive voices. I think my favorite example of this... Was also on Facebook. I have a friend that has a Portuguese water dog you know the ones that look like they have dread locks. I was asking people for advice about issues the dog was having, some random guy flooded the post with hate for Obama because he has the same kind of dog. Of course after trying to talk to the guy about how he can have whatever opinion he wants about who ever he wants I am trying to ask a semi serious question that has nothing to do with him. Of course asking the person to go somewhere else with that was a violation of his freedom of speech (you know because apparently I am the Federal Government. So long story short I think actually doing real moderation is part of what keeps things civil and from devolving into a stupid useless mess. And if you don't have enough places to share your opinions or insult people you barely know, then there is something wrong and maybe fix that first. You know considering there are more places then not that have miserable and useless moderation.

If you witness something that you believe crosses forum guidelines, there's no good reason not to report it. You're helping the Mods do their job. I you believe that the Mods have good judgement, then there's nothing to worry about. There's nothing to worry about anyways, given that reports are confidential.
While the vast majority of posters are solid and straightforward there are always a few who have significant boundary issues, like the former member who decided to post a 17 page ranting screed against the WHO, complete with charts, or who are, for want of a better, more enlightened, and more nuanced way to express it, completely toxic nut cases.
So is this what this is all about!? I'd love to see the rant :ROFLMAO:

Rules violations that impede or degrade the free flow of discussion and enjoyment of this forum should be reported and dealt with as management sees fit. it's the only way to preserve what we have here.

Anyone else, trying to hide behind the power of the "report" button to shield their tender ego and narcissistic tendencies should be encouraged to go ahead and report just how the bad man hurt them, so that they can be shown the door.

The rest of us can continue with the ever-popular sport of walking the thin line.

Gosh, don't you just hate it when you see a cogent, well written post that speaks to the issues and only the issues?
