Cleaning the stem and stummel after the pipe cools with everclear with a pipe cleaner is what i do after I take the spoon from my czech tool and with the back of the spoon i kind of burnish the inside but not to hard. This helps to keep the cake just right. If you are smoking a meershaum tale you tool and lightly scrap the inside then take a paper towel and twist it in. Put your pinky inside the bowl and feel for anything lumpy . If you find some particles still stuck to the inside go again with the pipe tool and the paper towel.

l'm probably all FUBAR, but all I do to clean between rotations is:
1. Gently wipe soot from bowl with a paper towel
2. Store with stem up for 24 hrs
3. Disassemble and run pipe cleaner through stem and pipe orifice.
4. Reassemble
It seems to work to my satisfaction. I'm still a rookie, though.
