Here’s how we got there—

You’d best take a bath and clean up and powder under both armpits in Clayton Missouri, it’s a high toned neighborhood. The police ride around on horseback.

This is the largest and best pipe shop I’ve ever seen in all my life, waking distance from the enormous St Louis County Courts. They have more cigars and pipes for sale than anyplace I’ve seen, ever. They have about any kind of luxury pipe tobacco you’d want, all in oak racks behind glass.

Most of the cans of tobacco are not priced. If you have to ask then shop elsewhere. I requested the owner’s choice of five little cans of the absolute best grades of aromatics and he delivered. All five are German imports and are wildly aromatic and yummy.

I bought about $140 worth of tobacco and a $25 lighter and an $80 pipe and the sales tax of 10.24% brought the total to $270. The receipts are NOT itemized.

My $124 list pipe was on a discount rack, the owner said were all discounted 40%. There were a lot of Dunhills beside it a special cabinet, some over a thousand dollars, although not discounted.

They have a huge walk in pipe room and an even larger walk in humidor. There are personal cigar lockers and smoking rooms front and rear.

If you want it, they probably have it or can order it.

If you want to see these pipe shops—-hurry.

I was the sole customer in the store. It had the emptiness of a tomb about the place.

The owners claim their main seller is cigars to the business crowd (there are Fortune 500 employers all over and it’s the county seat) and tariffs forced them to raise all cigar (and pipes and tobacco) prices from 8% to 20%.

I was sort of surprised and asked, your customers here don’t check prices and surely if they can afford one can afford two dozen?

And they said if a man has came in here every day to buy nine dollar cigars for years and years, he may not pay eleven dollars.

I can’t even imagine their rent in downtown Clayton.

There’s no good place to park. My wife said all the parking meters are some kind of subscribers only. Seriously.

When I had cases in Clayton I used huge parking garages, but they keep the streets open by large fees to park.

Both owners knew Wayne Davis of Jon’s Pipe Shop in Columbia.

And really, the shop in Clayton is like Wayne’s only with stars, bars, diamonds and oak leaf clusters.

The walk in cigar humidor at Clayton is as large as Wayne’s entire shop.

The Clayton location does accept plastic money, but no cash register.

At Clayton your wife can’t see you in the back lounge but she can in the front. Wayne only has a front lounge.

But this might as well be Wayne Davis reaching up for my pipe tobacco.

I wonder who Jon was that set up all those stores?

The one in Clayton is minutes away from Forest Park.

IMG_2853.jpeg

——

Forest Park is short on shelter houses, but it’s 1,200 acres.

And there are many other nice parks and cemeteries in St Louis where a feller might practice singing through his nose and playing his guitar, you know?

The very first song I performed in public was Across the Brazos at Waco when I was about six years old.

Billy Walker live about age 61 in 1990.

After performing at a charity concert in Kansas City, Kansas on March 3, 1963, Walker received a call to return to Nashville.[2] Fellow performer Hawkshaw Hawkins gave Walker his commercial airline ticket, and instead flew back to Tennessee on March 5 on a private plane, which crashed, killing Hawkins, Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and pilot Randy Hughes.

No wonder my old grandmother Ma Agee despised and hated and loathed Roy Acuff and Fred Rose.:)

This shop is much larger than the old location. The old location was long and narrow and didn’t have the lounge.

Check out John Dengler in old town St Charles MO if you want another old time cigar/pipe shop with squeaky floors and all.

The little blonde headed girl across the street from Ma Agee’s vine covered rambler on the corner next to the Hermatige Public Schools was named Yvette.

And her and my Grandma were buddies and pals and Ma would invite Yvette over to play with all my four little beautiful cousins (who all grew up to be schoolteachers and such and one married a multimillionaire)

There I was like my hero Billy Walker, flanked by two cousins on one side and two on the other and Yvette could do a mean high tenor harmony, you know?

Ma Agee played the keyboard outside on the porch and my Daddy could whistle like Billy Walker and the rest of the family played many musical instruments, including my guitar picking Uncle Jiggs (father of my four gorgeous little cousins).

It wasn’t long until my Mama would shout out—-

Charlie’s Shoes

I asked the one old man running the counter what his best selling, most cotton candy at the fair aromatic he had in the entire shop and he handed me a can of Devil’s Holiday and said only buy this if you love aromatics.

This is by far our best seller.

I turned it over and saw no price tag.

I asked what does it smell like, and he said a berry garden under a cherry tree in a peach orchard, it’s about thirty some dollars and we have a hard time keeping it in stock.

IMG_2859.jpegIMG_2857.jpeg

I said I’ll take that and give me four more cans that are as close to being that aromatic as you’ve got, the best!

And I needed a $25 fancy Vertico lighter too plus a new $80 pipe.

IMG_2835.jpeg

There’s a Costco not far from Forest Park where my wife said geezus Christ almighty that tobacco smells like cherries in bloom, and I went in and bought a six pack of three pound Kirkland Columbian coffee in steel cans.

I bought a boom box for the next Cahow Family Reunion.

IMG_2867.jpeg

That’s a smaller sized Marxman Big Boy, which came in today.

My cousins and I still do Matamoras and all the other Billy Walker mega hit standards.

My wife needs a special diet and she loves the $4.99 roasted chickens at Sam’s Club.

What I can’t figure out is how Sam roasts an $7.68 chicken and sells it hot and properly seasoned for $5.:)

IMG_2875.jpeg

She let me run in and get her two chickens but on the way back I spied exactly the right ear bugs a feller might listen along to Billy Walker while playing a Fender or a Guild or a Martin HD28.

I was plumbed shocked to find myself one of the younger folks at Sam’s Club. Sam is going to have to get some younger people in Sam’s Club or it’s slowly going to be one of them there deezasters acomin’, you know?

Sam had my open ear head phones on sale for half off and I took a card so the lady at the check out could fetch them for me.

They don’t trust the customers so much at Sam’s but there’s all kinds of theft and robberies in this sin cussed world today all full of woe.

After a nice young man fetched me my ear buds and 22 pounds of Meow Mix cat food and a big double pack of French’s Yellow Mustard for $7 and $10 worth of chickens my wife drove over to Hi Vee and about bought the entire produce section, I’d reckon.

I noticed she had lunch meat and a bottle of Grey Pupon horseradish mustard.

She must be planning us a picnic under the twin bridges over the Missouri Riven at the Galen Access, because we hill folks only eat French’s yellow mustard made in Springfield Missouri or nothing, you know?

——

That old man at Jon’s Pipe Shop in Clayton yesterday selected me five cans of aromatic tobacco and two of them were great bargains, only $27.50 for 100 grams.

I wonder who John Aylesbury was, some old German who made pipes and sold tobacco?

IMG_2873.jpegIMG_2874.jpeg

He gave me both the red and green boxes and usually the red one of anything tobacco is stoutest.

With the smaller size Big Boy Marxman I got in a really nice French made Marxman Virgin Briar that’s stamped France but seems every bit as good as one made at 27 West 24th St 10 New York New York.

My Uncle Jiggs was one of the best best guitar pickers I’ve ever seen or listened to.

He could play all up and down the neck of his Kay guitar (that my cousin Pammy still plays today) and do bar chords and hammer ons and offs and all kinds of fancy licks.

He’d sit his father Pa Agee out in a chair in the yard with all the company that our concerts drew in and have his four daughters and his wife and his sister and her young’un (me) and the cute little blond headed blue eyed neighbor girl Yvette sing and play other instruments while he’d show off his guitar skills while his mother Ma Agee played the keyboard.

Anybody who plays a flat top dreadnaught is a little bit of a show off, you know?

sorry if i missed your comments on it. I am wondering what you think about the aylesburys. i always almost buy them lol.

Also, try “St michaels holiday” by ash and ember in arkansas. I think you have to order by phone. they made it for jimmy akin, a catholic apologist who wanted something similar to DH, but with a different name.

So what did you think of Dan Tobacco Devil's Holiday?

It's also sold in bulk if you like it.

I’m sitting out on my deck and smoking Devil’s Holiday and when my wife walks by she says it’s not fair I can’t smoke and you smoke that stuff that smells better than the produce section of Hi Vee!!!

What’s that boom box, did you get that last night at Costco?

Yes, so we can sing togather again.

This high dollar German tobacco is expensive, I’ll let it go out.

She said why do you need a boom box for us to sing?

And I said I’ll be your Billy Walker if you’ll be my young KD Lang.:)

We need to practice.

Sounds like you had a good day so far!

I'm going to send you some KBV Garden of Freya to try ; )

I’m the happiest and most contented hillbilly in the Ozarks and by a wide margin.

I’ve practiced law for 42 years now and so far have gotten away with it slick, and helped over 20,000 people and not a one mad at me, that I know of.

I’m not a mega rich man but I’d have to live to be as old as Methuselah to be a poor man.:)

I can afford all the cans of German tobacco I want, and then some, you know?

I’m out here in the dark trying to get my air buds to pair with my boom box and not having much luck. All these little Vietnamese made toys have their own icon on this triple camera IPhone 16 Pro

IMG_2881.jpeg

My grandfather Eric “Pa” Agee lived to be 92 and my 75 year old grandmother lit his last Camel and he passed away oeaceful, in the vine covered rambler on the corner by the Hermitage school in 1972, a year after my own father.

I’ve kept my voice through over fifty years of smoking, and so have my four beautiful cousins and my lovely wife, only she barely made forty years of smoking before the doctors told her to quit.

Smoking is a very unreliable way to die young and make a pretty corpse, you know?

Billy Walker was NOT related to another old twanger named Charlie Walker.

I need to learn to pick notes instead of just chords, I’d reckon.

I am trying to find a bullmoose Marxman but they don't turn up much.

The “Virgin Briar” Marxman is French made but otherwise looks very Marxy except for FRANCE stamping where it ought to read Imported Briar.

The USA made bent Rhodesian is a big, fat chubby pipe with a Big Boy type saddle stem.

IMG_2902.jpeg

There’s not any A,B, or C stamped on it and it’s a big chunk of a pipe.

Let’s call it Little Big Boy.:)
