I'm new to posting to this forum. I've been enjoying the pipes magazine website for many months now and I want to thank Kevin and all the members for making this site possible. There is a wealth of information on here and I'm so glad to be a part of it.
A little about me. I live in Idaho and have enjoyed pipe smoking for over 20 years now. I came across pipe smoking first from seeing photos of my dad smoking his pipe. He had several stored away. He had given up smoking when me and my twin brother were born but I remember the stories he would tell me about pipe smoking and how my grandfather taught him about pipes. He told me about smoking his meerschaum and how to take care of it properly. I was just a young boy then but years later after he had passed I thought I would look into taking up smoking a pipe myself.
I never was interested in smoking cigarettes but I always loved the smell of cigars and pipes. I purchased a Dr. Grabow from a drug store in town for my first pipe. My friends and I would smoke Captain Black tobacco in the managers office after closing time at the movie theater we all worked for at the time. We would turn on just the desk lamp and sit around with our pipes lit telling stories about cars, work and women. This became a regular routine for us. We finally discovered a couple of fin smoke smoke shops in Boise. One was Sturmans and the other House of Robinson. Sturmans is still open where I frequent to still by tobacco and also where I have purchased several fine pipes. The House of Robinson has been closed for many years now but I found out that he would hand make pipes at his store. After going through my dads pipes I found he had 3 bulldogs made there. Beautiful work.
I have about 15 pipes now. Some were my dads and some I purchased along the years. I even recently purchased an electronic pipe to puff on during the cold evenings when I'm sitting in the house, since I don't smoke in my home. I have always loved English blends. If I'm out where a lot of people will be I will smoke an aromatic. My girlfriend loves the smell of my Lane 1Q. I've smoked that a lot around her and she doesn't like it much when I smoke one of my latakia blends around her. She says I smell like a campfire. But it is the Orientals I truly love. Nothing like getting up early before everyone else in house is awake and having a cup of coffee out on the porch with my pipe filled with Frog Morton.
I've really enjoyed reading through the forum posts and listening to the radio show weekly. Brian has really sparked my interest in getting a pipe club started here locally. I know I always get many nice comments about my pipe when I smoke it in public. I'm a deputy commissioner for the Scottish clan Gunn. 2 years ago a photographer for a paper out if Walla Walla Wa. Did a little write up on me when I was attending a games in Athena and penned me as the "Smokin' Gunn". I've been known as that since at the festivals I've attended. I just know that I have really enjoyed my pipe for years and in a way it was handed down to me by my dad and to him by his father. I've been very happy to find such a great place like this to share my love of smoking with others of the same passion. Again I want to thank all of you that make this possible. I look forward to broadening my tobacco choices. I'm up for suggestions. And I'm looking forward to making some new friends.

Slainte!

Shawn

Welcome, Mr. Gunn and great intro. I'm a meerschaum lover, too and started with Captain Black! I'm new to smoking a pipe. Just a year and a half in and PM has steered me past many rookie issues that would have made my progression a lot slower and perhaps disastrous! I feel at home here on PM and we Texas folk have started meeting for a bowl or six once in a while because of this place!

Welcome! I believe my family also comes from Clan Gunn from all the research I have done to this point. My Grandfather thought our family was Scottish that emigrated to Ireland then to America, but I was able to trace back directly to a very great grandfather that started my paternal line, Alexander Jameson of East Lothian. I believe this would make my family part of the original McHamish (not sure if I spelled that correctly it's been a while since I conducted my research). To my knowledge they were among the Clan Gunn. Let me know if there is anyway you can confirm this. Welcome again! It was also my Dad and Grandfather that taught me about the pipe.

Welcome Shawn, like you I had a pipe smoking father who was also a carpenter so I guess my life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man to borrow from the song. Glad your here and look forward to your involvement.
