I have been playing gigs for 25+ years at this point and there is something so much more satisfying and infinitely more interesting about getting to improvise for 3 hours as opposed to running through consistent arrangements every night.

As a listener, I never get tired of Miles and Coltrane - I have been on a heavy Pat Metheny and Kurt Rosenwinkel trip for a couple years now. I think all of the jazz-oriented genres have some good offerings. ...Albert Ayler is an acquired taste :)

I wish there are listening bars here in Los Angeles that are fashioned after the OG jazz listening bars in Japan... and also allow pipe smoking while sipping a cup of Joe. I can dream, right?

A great intro to classic jazz and John Coltrane is Coltrane's Ballads. Not a wall of sound but it bends and shapes some great tunes.
Sonny Rollins is not hard to absorb
Dexter
....so many....
Blue Train was my initiation into Coltrane's body of work. After I read biographies about his life, listening to A Love Supreme meant so much more now to me.
