I guess a qualify as more a Jazz fanatic than a Jazz fan.
I grew up listening to Swing ,Hard Bop and "Soul Jazz" .
Since I live in the NY/NJ metro area I have been able to hear many of my favorite musicians live.
My best sources for Jazz over the air waves comes from two local radio stations.

Columbia University

Jazz88

Both of these stations have a streaming component so they can be heard over the internet.

I lack the musical aptitude to always appreciate jazz fully, but it is a genre I really enjoy regardless. Muriel Grossman's latest album, "Devotion," is a spiritual jazz album that is my favorite release this year, excepting Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "Wild God." My favorite jazz artist has to be Miles Davis. His work with his first quintet is constantly played while I am enjoying my pipe.

So many eras and styles of jazz from which to choose. If a person likes music there’s probably some kind of jazz they will enjoy.

That said, jazz, even more than classical, speaks more deeply to a listener who understands theory and composition and/or plays music. This leads to the reputation of unapproachability.

Jazz is like chess, a drop from which a gnat may drink or an ocean in which an elephant can bathe. There’s something for everyone.

I still recall the first time I really “got” Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew. I had listened to it for years but one day something clicked and it was literally an epiphany. My mind was blown.

Love it. As a former keyboardist, what other genre can provide me with a Bb7#5#9 chord?

Edit: I realize now that the obvious alternate answer is prog rock, so allow me to rephrase the question: what other genre can provide me with a Bb7#5#9 chord and not cause every attractive female within restraining order-serving distance to flee in abject horror?

I'm new to Jazz. I do have a limited, but in depth experience with some musics. Scottish small music being one of them since I competed in it for over 20 years. And their big music from listening and appreciating them.

The classic rock has been my most listened genre for most of my life, all 57 years of it. Jazz has been something I think of as an elevator music, along with whole catalog of Billy Joel's career. Don't get me wrong. Billy Joel's my favorite musician. His skill, when comes to piano is second to none. He does create classical composition.

But jazz never bit me before, until recently. Hard Bop was very easy for me to understand. Virtuosity of the individual instrumentalists was very easy to understand. Their execution and expression was very obvious.

As I'm enjoying my Jack and Coke, I'm very grateful that some of these old recordings are still available for me and others to enjoy, mostly in Japan.
Welcome to the wonderful world of jazz. Keep in mind there is no one jazz, there are over 30 recognized types.

One of the best, and least known, line of recording is produced by THREE BLIND MICE out of Japan. Most of these albums are simply great. With a little searching you can find some of these or samples on Youtube. puffy

I wouldn't personally say I am a fan of jazz music, though that's not to say I dislike it. I really like some jazz. It's like rock... I don't care for rock for the most part, but I absolutely love Billy Joel, David Bowie, The Doors, King Crimson and a handful of others. I would say I hate nu-metal, with the exception being that I like System of a Down and older Linkin Park, but beyond those two, I absolutely despise that genre.

Jazz though is different, and my relation to jazz is like with "classical" music... I'm picky. There's stuff I like about the genres and about specific subgenres within, and I don't hate most of the stuff in either, just am indifferent to some of it and like some of it, and dislike certain styles within.

Bebop is probably my favorite form of jazz... your Charlie Parkers and Dizzy Gillespies. I also kind of like swing jazz, but I couldn't even tell you any names there other than Duke Ellington.

I can say I don't like the smooth jazz, Kenny G. type "The Weather Channel"/"elevator" types of jazz.

But probably my most favorite jazz musician ever has to be Tom Waits, though he wasn't exclusively jazz (experimental, blues, folk...), though much jazzier on his earlier records like "Small Change" and "Nighthawks at the Diner".
Bebop is the only style of jazz I like. I'm more of an electrified blues guy.

I'm by no means a jazz aficionado, but I enjoy big band, swing, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, and a variety of other musicians. I used to perform ragtime, wonderful music to play.
While I enjoy various forms of music, my favorite listening remains classical, almost everything from plain chant to Philip Glass.

Miles Davis has to be one of the best known, and best love jazz trumpet player. His legacy is well respected. The trails he had paved is legendary. But compare to his contemporaries, his fingering sucks moose cock. I can't listen to him.

P.S. That was unfair. Here are two trumpet players you can compare to. Clifford Brown, and Lee Morgan. Their style, expression and execution are miles ahead.

I am very much into jazz, fusion, and prog rock (which is just a variation on fusion most of the time). Miles, Charlie Parker, Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespe, Weather Report - Wayne Shorter in particular - and many others. I spent many years playing trumpet but never was able to hit that high C without my eyes bugging out! :)

I hate the so-called “smooth jazz” (think KennyG - ugh) which to me is elevator music. I don’t consider it jazz at all.

ETA: I also forget Charles Mingus! Jeff Beck’s “Pork Pie Hat” was a tribute to him.

For me it depends on the time of day. When I first get up and after breakfast, I sit down for a couple mugs of dark roast coffee, my first pipe of the day and classical chamber music. Cannot due any harder core music at that time of the day. Blues is set aside for the post-lunch puff.
