A slight scare and something in my last post started me reflecting on a topic I wonder if any share. I have been blessed (or cursed) from a young age with a strong sense of tradition and sentimentality.
Every few years I have to purge my momento pile to get rid of stuff that was to remind me of people or events. But there are some things I likely will never get rid of.
One is a puck signed by the goalie from the 1980 US men's hockey team, for example.
When the first friend I made here in Tennessee suddenly passed, I talked to his family about purchasing one of his firearms, to have a token to remember my friend by.
This has factored into my pipe purchases, as well. The sense of history is likely why I have so (sooo) many old US pipes.
Like, one day I was in a B&M in Portland, OR (82nd Avenue Tobacco & Pipe. Great place if you are nearby), and I saw a Brigham 150th Anniversary of Canada being Canada pipe. I didn't have a Brigham (motivation), I love historical link (even more motivation), and I quite like Canada (tipping point motivation). So I bought it.
When the estate of George Sidney listed a bunch of pipes on eBay and I am fine with estate pipes, it was cool to have a piece of history when I bought a couple of those pipes.
Similarly, when Foggymountain quit smoking, I made sure to buy a pipe of his (or 2) so when I smoke them, I can reflect on all the good conversations he was in here on PMF.
When FishnBanjo passed, I bought several pipes from his collection as well. He was always kind and a great contributor here on the forum. A good friend to all.
It doesn't have to be some expensive pipe, either. I much prefer a favorite to a trophy, if that makes sense. That would be a stronger connection to the person, in my opinion.
I know I am like the most inconsistent member of this forum, disappearing for long stretches and whatnot. But there are several of you who I would also like to have a pipe from when the time comes, whether it is just a drawdown, quitting, or your cross over the rainbow bridge (you old goats). I only mention that because someone mentioned a person here in the "he's not around anymore" kind of way and I was sad he may have passed. That was not the case, luckily.
Anyone else picking up what I am putting down? I know I am an odd duck (and yes, I like L'anatra pipes), but am I alone in my oddity? Am I a sentimental fool?
