Let me rephrase -- petitions don't as a general rule succeed unless they are spear-headed by what effectively amounts to the same WASPS and SMs that have been passing everything since this country started. . .except in California where things are just wonky.
But more than anything -- there's a reason I said "Do it" before saying it doesn't work. It doesn't matter if it will or not, because it technically could.
On this issue, petitions won't work, simply because there is no organization of smokers, the foundation of one is probably illegal, there aren't a hell of a lot of us, and even if every single one of us acts individually it means nothing unless we act together, which isn't very plausible. I certainly don't have the charisma to pull it off. I can't even make a friend except on the internet (not that I try very hard).
There's a BIG difference between 20,000 letters from men saying they want something -- and 50 women on yer doorstep with a piece of paper signed by 5,000 more.
An even bigger difference between being the guy fighting for our rights as American,s and being the guy who is only "thinking of the children".
Like I said -- try, because any man worth a damn fights for what he believes in. But, we're going to lose either way.
