The Abrams were active in Vietnam so they may be on the way out. Is the Army still running those for the foreseeable future? Of course, then there are the B52 bombers from the 1950's that are still in use and made a recent show-of-force flight on the borders of Iran. The ship I was on, USS Gallant, MSO 489, was built in the 50's, all spruce hull, and wasn't decommissioned until '93, when it was given/sold to the Taiwan navy. I was aboard '69-'70.

I've been fascinated to watch the evolution of the minesweeper replacements, the Littoral Combat Ships, made in two different distinct designs by two different shipbuilding contractors. The concept is that they have different set-ups depending on the ship's mission -- minesweeping, patrol, etc. etc. This means the crews have to be trained for different missions and equipment. It's received mixed reviews. Essentially, we did the same kind of adaptive use on our old wooden ship. We never swept for any mines, though we had the entire set-up. We were used for gun-runner patrols, sonar searches for downed cargo planes, patrols for off-course merchant ships in contested waters, weather and recon reporting, and the occasional man overboard searches where the sailor was located aboard his own ship sleeping somewhere. Our main battery was a mortar (!), replaced just as I was transferred by double-mount machine guns. Before that, the gunner's mate fired a single 50 cal. machine gun off the second deck, only required in a couple incidents.

Fact check: The Abrams tank was not deployed in Vietnam, but only came on duty in 1980. The confusion was that General Abrams was the last commander in Vietnam, but the tank came later. Sorry. There have been a series of updates of the tank over the years.

The Army kinda did the same thing in the mid 2000’s. They did away with the Generator repair MOS and just pushed all those guys n gals right into unmanned aircraft systems specialist slots. Yeah, worst aircraft maintainers ever! Those dudes were so overwhelmed by RF control systems, auto landing systems, control shelters, the aircraft themselves and computers everywhere that I actually felt pretty bad for them.

I’m a Marine kurtbob, what’s math?
Haha, that’s exactly what I mean brother! You guys play the dumb card to try and keep the world from finding out that y’all are NASA trained rocket doctors. I hope this post didn’t blow the cover for for the whole Corps! Air Force/Army here. In my job, I worked VERY closely with Marines and even trained some......nothing but respect from my perspective!

Didn’t start this thread to have a pissing contest. Relax, just passing on some info for the vets. We all served our country with pride regardless of your branch.
Hell, the main reason I joined the military was so I could make fun of other military members without violating the American taboo on saying anything disparaging about the military. Unless you’re a vet, that is.
