Just bought one of these guys, my first meerschaum! Only had a few bowls in it, spillman mixture, HH Old Dark Fired, and gh coniston cut plug and man does this thing gurgle!
I'm guessing these are pressed meerschaum. I wonder if natural absorbs moisture better becuase of the lattice work structure being more spacious...
I get now why pipes and bubbles used to be a thing in old cartoons and such, sounds like bubbles are gonna come out of this thing!

I think that they were mostly figurals at first, with a different design than more modern figurals. But I don't actually think that classic briar shapes were used often by meerschaum carvers. But I'm not that well read on this at all, so someone else might chime in.
For a grand you can have damn near any meer you please. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that the pipe you are envisioning in this rumination of yours can be had for much cheaper.
Felt like smoking some Raleigh this morning and puffed 3 bowls in 3 different meerschaums. They never disappoint. 
I don't understand the flow to this thread at all. The O.P's comments seem contradictory.
I have a Peterson Block Meerschaum and a Pioneer Block Meerschaum that are both great and cost less than $100 new. Block meerschaum by a well known maker is sufficient. Price is irrelevant.
If you read all the meerschaum care websites you would think you need a humidified clean room with anti-static, anti-magnetic flooring and a hazmat suit to smoke them. How did all those sailors in the 17th, 18th and 18th century smoke them without those perfect conditions ??? They are far more durable than people think ... just don't drop them on stone or cement.
As for $1500 suits ... a master tailor can make a $99.00 suit look like a $1500 suit. The tailoring is key. Get a good tailor first.

There's no way that AKB pipes to my knowledge are pressed meerschaum. I've got block meerschaum pipes that sometimes get some moisture in them because I haven't dried the tobacco that much--I do this depending on the blend because I find that drying some blends too much can reduce the flavor. Never had a desire for meer. Wait, I take that back. Would love Peterson Sherlock Holmes in meer, but it's more to do with everything pipe related and Peterson. So, no desire for meer. When I started smoking pipes, I heard natural finish was most expensive. So I got some. They were ok, but looked "dirty" after awhile. Didn't like it at all. Not all came out butt ugly, some are passably less ugly. That's why I like terracotta or walnut finish. I heard some story about how clean the meer tastes, but I can't imagine smoking something that looks like that has rotten banana finish. If I get lucky enough to run into one of Peterson SH in meer, and at good price, I might for go my distaste for rotten banana finish.

My first and only Meer was sent to me by the late, great fish'n'banjo. For clarity and definition of the flavor in a blend, I can't beat it. It's an estate straight billiard carved with wine grapes and leaves. Fish' often posted photos of himself in front of a tree smoking any one of his many beautiful pipes with the motto, "Keeping it smoky." A large collection of vintage fly fishing rods was another of his interests. In his smoking posts, he was always wearing one of his collection of driving caps.
