Clan? Really??!!I am waiting for someone to say that before waxing your meerschaum its advisable run it over with a bench mounted wire brush, dip it in cold coffee, wax the surviving pipe and then smoke Clan in it!

I smoked this all day and used 4/0 steel wool and cleaned it with Everclear, and the pipe is going to survive, I think. Whether it will look like it came from a spaghetti Western any time soon, is in doubt, though.

Waxing merely leaves a yellowish stain on the surface of the meer. Exterior waxing does nothing other than leave a coat of wax. VanCleef's pipe was, most likely, a prop, no telling how it was colored for that particular film. Also, there is no need to wear cotton gloves or use a cloth to hold a warm meer. Just wash your hands well before smoking or, hold the pipe by the stem. There is nothing particularly arcane about coloring meerschaum pipes. Just smoke the hell out of it!
There are machines around, mostly archaic, which will "smoke" the pipe for you if your can't handle multiple bowls daily.
And, if you are too impatient to color a meer naturally ... by a used pipe which is already saturated.

Those Van Cleefs are pre-stained with fumed rims.
I seriously doubt you'd achieve a similar patina just smoking your pipe X000 times. ?
Just enjoy smoking your pipe and don't worry what it looks like.

There were a rainbow of colors and shapes to chose from, and the price was $7.98. Considering my work study job paid $2.25 an hour, it came to about four hours pay.
Mine was blue. They can form a cake, I do not recommend one.
