Hello, all!
I just won this pipe. It caught my eye because it’s stamped “Root Briar,” but it’s sandblasted and has the T for Tanshell stamped after the group number. Too much to drink before showing up for work that day? Has anybody ever seen a sandblasted Root Briar before?

Nope, I've seen one with an umbrella though!

Hopefully some of our Dunhill historians will chime in and shed some light. Great grab, now the fun part-the cleanup!

Hahahaha wow, that’s quite a Root there! Yes the cleanup awaits! I’ve bought three Dunhills from this same seller a month or so ago and whoever owned these pipes before me was not too keen on care haha. Fortunately it’s usually just gunk removal, though. The pipes have all been in great shape underneath!

Can't wait to see it finished, I love a good sandblast!

I saw that too, and was going to post it in the English EBay thread.
I've been watching the seller lately.. What a haul of heavily enjoyed Dunhills lol. Many have struck my fancy but i haven't been in the cleaning mood lately.

I at first wondered if perhaps the owner had a regular Root Briar sandblasted by someone with the capability to do so, but then realized that Roots are stamped on the sides of round shanks, and never on the bottom. The stamping is totally authentic looking, so it's quite a mystery piece. Does anybody know if Dunhill ever allowed custom orders to be placed during the 1960s, where one could order a sandblasted Root Briar? Maybe there is something in a catalogue?

Cleanup complete!
A friend has gotten in touch with a collector who might be able to help figure out what has gone on here with this Root Briar Tanshell. Hope to learn something about it!

Yes sir it did! Every pipe I purchased from this seller has had one. It was quite a terror on a Group 3 Canadian!

Any pipe that had an inner tube crammed inside it I wouldn't want. Matter of fact I haven't even *seen* an inner tube since I was at the beach as a kid, unless you count the time I exploded one on my 10-speed at the gas station back in '76....

I personally prefer inner tubes. The shanks stay immaculately clean. I also am a sucker for gimmicks and gadgets, so inner tubes tick all the boxes for me.
