A Return to Pipes, Hello From Vegas!

Hello fellow pipers!

Some of you may of contributed to my ongoing question thread already so thank you very much!

I figured if I'm utilizing your knowledge and opinions I might as well introduce myself, so here goes nothing.
I'm returning to pipe smoking, it being my first introduction to tobacco, and I'm still a newbie when it comes to the serious stuff. I'm learning as much as I can about pipe makers, systems, and different packing methods. Air Pocket is a new one I didn't know about and works amazingly IMHO!

I can't tell you what blends I like since the only blends I remember were from a B&M store back home, their Amsterdam blend was amazing but I have no idea what it was. I just remember it being light and nutty with the most perfect aroma.

But I can show you my first haul which just arrived to get myself back into the hobby!



Let me know your thoughts on those tins if you've tried them!

Irish Flake is very good. It has the leathery, charred flavors of kentucky and some flowery notes from the virginias. There is also an elusive aniseed topping, very pleasant. It is strong, both in flavor and nicotine. It's strength may overpower all the nice flavors at first, but they are there. It goes well with a dram, to alleviate nicotine overdose.

Mac Baren 7 Seas Regular Blend is one of the first blends I tried as well. It have got a nice chocolate aroma and flavour. Have you cracked that tin open yet?

Where can I learn about this Air Pocket packing method? I gotta try it for myself.

I did indeed! You're spot on, the chocolate hit me like a ton of bricks and its next on my list of tobaccos to try tomorrow.

It's actually pretty intuitive, you want to make a plug with your fingers, pinch it real good in 3-4 fingers, then twist it into the top of the bowl, forcing it in without pushing directly down on the middle. I believe the idea is to have the air pocket it leaves in the bottom allow the smoke to billow and cool. It's also one of the only bowls I've lit so far that stayed lit throughout and that was on my first try!

The irish flake was a good choice in your first haul back, not only is it tasty but it packs a punch in the nicotine department. Personally I find it sits just the light side of most of the plugs and ropes I tried through, and the heavy side of most everything else I tried. This positioning makes it a good gauge for where to head concerning nicotine content....

Welcome! Irish Flake is a great tobacco. I also like Autumn Evening cut 50/50 with Brown Bogie. That’s a good selection of blends to start out with to gauge what you like and then you can go from there.
