Very wise words TopD. Thank you so much for sharing. You are not a snob but truly a class act!

One more thing that I will add, do not be afraid to work harder than others. In the last five years I have been able to go from entry level to management. I have seen my pay increase by over $7 and hour. I know that is not huge money, but it is more than others who work to just get by have gotten. My co-workers have accused me of kissing ass, and I am fine with them thinking that because while they try to impress with words I impress with performance. (By the way, I am not bragging but I am pleased with what I have accomplished)
Another lesson I learned was to quit working to try to impress other. I now work for my own satisfaction. We spend to much time at work and away from our families to do it for anyone but ourselves. At then the end of every work day, and I do mean every work day, I ask myself, well Jeremy are you happy with your performance today? If the answer is yes I go home with a peaceful mind. If the answer is no I then make the necessary changes in my attitude, performance, etc. I then go home with a peaceful mind. Notice, I do not ask what does my boss think or what do my co-workers think. I am not concerned with what others think if I truly know that I gave my best.
Life is short, work to live but don't live to work.

Some really good stories here, thanks to all!

Ya know, I had more nerve and took bigger risks (which is fine when your younger) until I hit a certain age. I had everything in stock funds. At 55, and as planed, I moved 25% into bond funds and 5% into gold funds. "FUNDS", not actual gold. If you want a gold coin or two for something cool to use as a ball marker on the golf course, have at it! But don't hoard gold, it's a bad large percentage investment.
If you work for a company that offers a 401k savings plan and your not in it, your missing a HUGE OPPORTUNITY! Most match your contribution dollar for dollar, or even 50cents to the dollar. That's an automatic 50% return regardless of what the market is doing. The military even does this now... I wish they did when I was active duty.
One more thing: If you do want professional advice, go ahead with that also. But not from the broker down the street or at the bank. Look on-line for a "For Fee Only Investment Adviser". It'll take $150 or so for his time but he'll help you make a plan and then you go home and do it yourself. He will have no stock, fund, commodity or any other product to push.... "advice only". Good Luck Guys.... "The Snob" :)

I suppose I'm a little different here...I applaud those who seek to retire, and plan accordingly.
I buried my dad 32 years ago when he was 47; mom a bit later. They never got to enjoy retirement. I have known numerous people who became ill or disabled after scrimping and saving for years, never getting to enjoy all that they worked for. A good friend had a stroke last year and is permanently disabled. The picture of apparent good health, he is now 48.
I'm weird, I suppose. I'm 50 now. I like working, and never want to retire. I've seen what it does to people, and firmly believe retirement kills more people than hard work. I enjoy time off and travelling, but I really enjoy working, and don't want to stop. I work hard, and provide for my wife and family. But, I spend what I have and enjoy it now, because in my world, nothing is guaranteed but today.

I also like fine pipes, too! Duhills of course; have to save, and pay cash for 'em!

I don't think you can call a person a "snob" for enjoying the fruits of his labors. You spend your money on a pipe. Someone else buys an expensive fishing rod, bowling ball, set of golf clubs, or car. More power to ya. I spent 22 years in the Air Force, retired and spent the next 18 as a professor of economics. I retired from that as well. I have three retirements if you count Social Security. Since I contributed to it for 40 years I feel entitled. If I want to buy something other folks think is frivolous, tough mammary glands. I got divorced 35 years ago and my son died when he was 42, so I have only myself to "worry" about. You are not a snob. A snob is someone who looks down on people who can't afford, or won't buy, what he/she thinks are the finer things of life. You are not a snob. However, your avatar seems to indicate you retired from one of those "other" services. Since I am Air Force and you were obviously a "ground pounder", I'm afraid I may be considered a snob where you are concerned. HooRaa!
