As a new hobbyist, I have recently been exploring different tobacco types and blends. This is really a lot of fun; all the new smells and flavors. I have 6 open (jarred) blends in my current rotation, and about a dozen tins in the cellar/queue waiting their turn. I think I am doing a pretty good job with drying, packing and cadence, as my tongue feels good and I am able to taste the tobacco(s) comfortably.

However... with a few of the blends I have right now, I am feeling a nasal burn (or bite?) on the retrohale. It's not overly painful, but much more noticeable than the sensation I get with some of other blends. More specifically, I am getting the sensation of this "nose bite" with Cobblestone Outdoor Hiking (all burley), Mac Baren's HH Pure Virginia, and PS Luxury Bullseye Flake. I am NOT getting this with other blends I have tried like Peterson Nightcap, Amphora Special Reserve Black Cavendish, or Boswell's Northwoods. And this is a nasal thing only, I seem to be OK with respect to the physical (mouth) discomfort that some smokers describe from certain tobaccos (like Virginias, for example)

I see a lot of content about Tongue Bite, but no so much about Nose Bite (if that's even a term). And, of course, I can mitigate this by only doing a retrohale with the last little wisps of smoke. But I thought I would put this out there and see if anyone has experienced this or has any thoughts or advice.

Thank you!

Wasabi punch? One of the members used to call it that. Don't force the smoke hard through the nose. Let it just flow out. And if it's painful, don't do it. Retrohale is good, but it's not mandatory.
That's a great description. It does feel like a Wasabi burn. I get so much flavor from the retrohale, I think I've started to do it unconsciously. Overdo it, perhaps.

Thanks, bullet!

There is nose burn, then there is NOSE BURN

I was having a bowl of laksa noodles (with extra sambal) for lunch yesterday.
Took a mouthful of noodles and curry soup, then had a huge sneeze with a resultant spray out of my nostrils.
I couldn't see for the next 5 minutes for the copious tears streaming down my cheeks.

NOT pleasant 😖

I love retrohaling, and urge you to continue since you like it too. To me it just sounds like "spice". Which to me is a kind of tingly feeling in my nose. Smoking slow and taking care will make sure that it isn't too intense. But a lot of people really like that feeling.

Now I was quite adventurous in my youth where a few substances went up my nose that on reflection, I wish that it hadn't.

But snorting chilli? Nah, that's just too out there even for me.

Since I sport a white mustache I refrain from retro-haling or doing the Chinese drawback because a brown GT stripe would not be a good look.

You can burn your nose, if you smoke hot and retro. I did that for a few weeks and one morning I woke up and felt like I had to blow my nose, it was all blood. Quite a bit too. After a few weeks of stopping I returned to the hobby and now smoke slow, cool, and I don't retro every single puff.

It's why I dropped old Joe Kranz. Killed my nose
