cav, you definitely want to smoke any tobacco low and slow because that is where the flavor is. If you heat up your tobacco by smoking too fast, you lose flavor.
I meant low and slow in the oven ad Old Cajun stated lol.

cav, I get it now. I have never done that so I have no comment. Good luck with it.

I'd like to sample some flake that is 'Lakeland' style, but it's hard to get samples unless they are in bulk. Orlik is calling to me but I don't want to buy a tin and not like it, ya know..

A tin of Orlik Golden Sliced is $7 - live a little!
Buy some Ennerdale Flake and you will get the gist of what Lakeland tobaccos are all about!
That is a little extreme - there are milder and probably more accessible Lakelands out there - but most of them are offered by Gawith & Hoggarth. They are offered in bulk, yes, but 2 oz is not a huge commitment. Again, if you are not open to soapiness and florals then forget about Lakelands.
Bob's Chocolate Flake is a very mild introduction but it is enough to determine what everyone means when they discuss 'soapiness' in a tobacco. (Latakia is also present in a noticeable, albeit minor, quantity)

I am researching about lakeland's and non-lakelands. I will decide then try something in my next order.

I'm a cheap bastard, what can I say? LOL!
I'd rather not waste any $ than throw out $7. I'll try out some bulks and see what's what. I just might not have a taste for some it, where as other do. I like all the points given though. Learning alot and that's what I like!

I hear you but I will say one more thing on the matter...
Orlik Golden Sliced is probably one of the safer flake bets out there.
It is a light golden Virginia flake with a dash of perique (that I can't sense) and a pleasant yet mild citrus topping. It is a great VA for the present and it will only get better with time. Cast your reservations aside and check it out!
Anyway, I would caution you not to get more than one Lakeland at a time - they are intense and not for everyone so tread with caution. Keep in mind that you do not like Erinmore Flake. EF is NOT a Lakeland in my opinion and has no relation to those over-the-top blends. The pleasant and subdued fruitiness of Erinmore is blown out of the water by the perfumey nature of Lakelands...
Also, nobody is going to bat 1.000 - expect a few strikeouts along the way. Keep researching and hopefully you will be able to avoid most of the duds. Reading reviews can only go so far, though. Ordering blends blind is an art moreso than a science and, as such, perfection is not possible but there are lessons to be learned from our mistakes...

simenon, every word in that statment is true. I'm going to try some of the bulk flake at some point but not just yet. I want to get more in my cellar being that I only started back smoking a pipe about 4mo or so ago. I have about 1/3lb of Mac Baren Royal left and about 4 bowls of plumcake lol. Placing my order tomorrow morning and hopefully its here soon lol.

One more think to say in favour of flake - they seem to stay fresh for a good bit longer than ready rubbed or ribbon cut. Twist/Rope tobacco lasts even longer. Last Autumn I ordered more than usual of my favourite twist and I've just finishing it off. Although the outer layer is a little dry, the inner rope is still just fine.
