It is worth noting that some people back in the initial era of hippies, which were the ancestors of the hipsters,

who were ultra hip turned out to be forward thinkers who, whatever you may think of their

ideas and causes, were forward independent thinkers and in no group's pocket. Frank Zappa who looked

like just another zonked out rocker was a highly sophisticated avant guard composer who went way beyond

rock'n'roll as a musicologist and philosopher. John Lennon was a prototypical political thinker despite

himself. And if you don't like either of those examples, there are dozens of others who have proven out

to be way beyond the miserable little stereotypes that were done of them by their jealous competitors and

detractors of their times. Various key religious figures were written off as poseurs and provocateurs by the

establishments in their day. This doesn't mean that every musical success is Mozart. I pick and choose too.

To me (I'm sorry) Jim Morrison is wildly overrated. Leonard Cohen is way underrated. But I'm sure many

Forum's members would exactly reverse those assessments. So it goes. Ya calls em as ya sees em.

@mso489: Bravo...so very well said. That is one of the best comments I’ve read in a long time (and I concur with your assessments of Morrison and Cohen btw).

I agree with that completely. Jim thought he was a poet. With the recent passing of Lou Reed, some attention has been paid to his wife, Laurie Anderson. While I don't get what she does, plenty of folks are very appreciative of her work. To her fans, it seems what she does is art.

My point is, we shouldn't be so exclusive or precious with our hobby that we mentally decide who is "deserving" enough to smoke a pipe, or be thought of a "real" pipe smoker, just based on what they look like and before actually getting to know them.
++1 sorringowl, well said.

I don't define myself as a "hipster", honestly don't know what they would be. I've enjoyed a pipe for over ten years now, I maybe in my early 30s. I have yet to wear "skinny jeans", or anything that is in style. I usually wear plain jeans, or shorts, and a T-shirt, with boots or skate shoes (been wearing those since I skated in school).
Anyways I have nothing against hipsters, what ever floats your boat. That being said if your smoking a pipe cause you think it looks cool, or want to get noticed. Please just stop, do it because you enjoy it, I think that would be the best reason.

I hate " labels". Hated them since Sociology class in highschool. It seemed a means to catergorize ones self and separate and segregate peoples from peoples.

Just enjoy yourself and identify with yourself. And F the rest the small minds that put you in a "class" and decide to treat you inferior because you choose to be not "conventional" towards a certain ideology.

Generally, hipsters are people in my age bracket who tend to act/dress "ironic" and deliberately unfashionable, and as pipe smoking is generally considered an old mans' thing, it falls under the hipster label.
As for Sherlock, you can't go wrong with Cumberbatch (yes, in spite of the lack of pipe)
