Words are funny critters. I see the word hipster in Forums. Here's what I think it means, how I read

it. The word hipster, in Forums, means a young person who smokes a pipe, but not just any young

person. The hipster young person, though only visualized in the vaguest and most nebulous way,

could be almost any young person with a high degree of attitude using a pipe as

much for dramatic effect as for a good smoke. I think that's all of it. Otherwise, it could be any of a long,

long list of stereotypes. It could be the preppy fraternity member who wears chinos and a dress shirt;

it could be the self-identified "goth," or whatever that group has evolved into. It could be a hip-hop

guy or gal, very urban. It could be an ancestor of the actual early-day hippies, long-haired and counter

culture. I just don't believe other than being young and having some degree of self-dramatizing attitude,

the term hipster defines much of anything. We'll continue to use it. I'm not on a campaign. But some

may agree with me, it's a very broad brush with not too much definition to it. Eh?

As I rember back in time many moons ago.To be hip to something ment that you had knowledge of it.I completely agree with those who say that now it refers to an old pipe smoker who's hips are constantly talking to him.

My definition would be a person who feigns passion for a certain thing for fashion and social reasons. Aka. a poser.

I assumed a Pipe Hipster was a pipe smoker with a bad hip.
Well, then I am HIP! Had the left hip replaced in May, right hip to be replaced next year. So am I an old/new hipster...

Never heard the term "Fixies" but I do know poser hipsters like fixed gear bicycles because someone told them they were hip and cool.

Mao that's actually the best definition for hipster I have heard so far. I say anyone smoking a pipe or attention can continue to spend good money to burn there mouth, doesn't effect me in the least and at least b&m's are being supported :)

I never heard the term before. I suppose it would be someone who smokes a pipe because they think it is the "thing to do". Some of those folks may stay with, some may not. Lots of us, I suppose, started the pipe because it fit with an image they wanted of themselves. I picked up the pipe all of those years ago because I thought that was part of being a "college man".

Whatever works.

To me the underlying question is whether you actually enjoy smoking the pipe or merely view it as a fashion accessory to be cool. If the former, then welcome to the club. If the latter, then..... really?

I'm a young pipe smoker, but certainly NOT a hipster. If you see a young person wearing tight jeans, big glasses, a sweater, a fashionable scarf, hair styled, and they are carrying a brown satchel bag with tons of that "look at me, I'm hot" attitude, they are probably a hipster. It's almost as if these people are trying hard to bring back that cool style that I love from the 40's and 50's, but they aren't doing it very much justice because it doesn't necessarily compliment their life style and interests. It's just their need to have attention, indulge in fads, and (contrarily) be "different." I'm probably being too harsh, but I just hate seeing people partake in fads. It's almost like seeing young girls on college campus wearing only leggings and yoga pants, but that is a rant for a different forum post.
If I offended anyone, I apologize. Disclaimer: Not all young people matching the above description are hipsters. Lifestyle, interests, and attitude should all be taken into consideration.
