I've never thought of that and today would have been perfect to do that.

Will more than likely try it now!

Awesome experiment! +1 for attempting

Makes me wonder if I set up my Meade LX-200 telescope and pointed it at the Sun with an eyepiece that can see a Galaxy 20 million light years away, I could possibly start a fire that would consume Washington D.C.?
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!

Might be a good idea to keep a magnifying glass in the tackle box or glove box for those times when the lighter fails.

Like kennerth, I seem to have more magnifying glasses around in my geezerhood.

Before my eyes started to go, the only thing I ever needed them for was burning ants.

Bailey, I smoked a bowl the other day from start to finish lit only with my lens. The tobacco smokes instantly as soon as you focus the point of light. I would almost say quicker and less trouble than messing with matches. The intensity is controlled by the distance between the object you want to burn and the lens itself. Raising the lens away from the object the circle of light will get bigger and also less hot. Bring it down to a pinpoint and it's like a laser. That distance is usually about 6 or 7 seven inches.
One thing I have noticed is that I suspect the light beam is super hot becuase it temporarily imparts a different, maybe a more burnt taste to my tobacco that is not present when I use a wood match or lighter to light. (There is some other discussions going on about how do you light and temperatures of flames etc.) So while it's a cool parlor trick so to speak it's not something I'll do too often. But as stated for an emergency back up for the tacklebox or out on the links its much better than no smoke!

Just tried it: unbelievable!! Lights in 5-10 seconds! Almost as fast as a lighter!
Great experiment for the kids. My girlfriend was even more blown away!
Great tip (specially when it's windy)!
Thanks!

As a teenager, this was the only way to light the pipe while sailing; it was too windy for anything else (no zippos in Spain at that time). We got the idea from "Tintin"; they use this trick to light Captain Haddock's pipe.[/unquote]

I'm a big believer that tools such as a magnifying glass be used only for its intended purpose and for nothing else. Everyone knows maginfying glasses are to be used exclusively for frying ants.

I know this is a "zombie post" (brought back from the dead) But there are a group of reenactors at a fair that we go to every year. They mainly use glass to light the pipes. Guy told me that if I look online or in antique shops I may find one for myself.
