But I bet you remember this one George.

Funny... I originally thought it was a '67, not a '57, so extra-super-duper-double-check that era's stampings if the date is important to you.

Here's the backstory for anyone interested, plus more pix.

The bad news... 1957 is a particularly scarce year

(no one knows why some Dunhill years are plentiful and others are rare, but dats da way it izz)

Keep an eye on MSD pipes, he lists a lot of Dunhills. This one is sold.
Even though its a 57 (my birth year) and thats a rare year I personally would pass on it as I dont like panel billiard/square shank pipes.others might love it.

thanks for the recommendation of MSD,some nice ones there.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. Falling back on my training, I have decided to adapt and overcome. I graduated from high school (barely I admit) in 1975. Smokingpipes.com showed the way forward this morning. It’s on the way! Rather flimsy excuse to buy another pipe but hey!

I blame it on the Eisenhower Recession (inventory liquidation from the mid 50s). I’m willing to bet that the mid to late 1950s DUNHILL pipes have the most “extra digit” stamp indicating the “sold in” year.

Intriguing argument. The contrary position could also be taken based on the common view that luxury goods (which in this context a Dunhill pipe definitely is) are generally held to be resilient in recessions since their customers are more insulated against the economic effects of downturns.

It would be interesting if enough 1957-1958 Dunhill pipes could be found and examined to be representative of the whole.

OK, add this to your data:
Dunhill 836 Shell dated '56, with something below the date that looks like 866 as best as I can tell through my
magnifying glass.
Dunhill #593 Shell dated '56, plus 7, plus 8
Dunhill LB Shell dated 1957
Dunhill 836 Tanshell dated 1958
Dunhill 837 Shell dated 1958

I hope I'm seeing these right, some are pretty faint. All were bought from Smoking Pipes years ago and I cross referenced my reading with their dates in my record. All these were sold by SPC as '60s pipes, but all have lines under the dates, indicating a '50s date if all my resourses are correct.
